WTF?

In Australia, the first day of Spring is Friday, 23 September. The
purported beginning of Spring as 1 September was 'manufactured'
by marketing and advertising executives in order to sell more stuff
after the cold winter months of retail slow down.

It's fixed by our planetary travel of course, and is known technically
as the Spring Equinox—12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

I recall reading somewhere that the reason Spring in Oz is 1 September is that was the day the British troops changed out of their winter uniforms...
