Take a look at a map, Pilgrims..... my projection that Putin would seek to move south to restore the old Russian Empire down there could be happening.... his visit to Iran MAY be to form an alliance - new Central Powers (how history repeats itself) the New Axis on which the world turns... only further East ....... or possibly to allay the fears of Iran that Russia might do just that... move south to restore its old empire.

Just brain-storming here..... if he fails in Ukraine, which seems likely - he may very well move south and east again... those countries down there can't prevent that, and even now rely, as Kazakhstan did to restore order, on Russian troops, who are still there.  Once in - never out.

We could be looking at the development of a new Axis of Evil.

For Putin to try to do business with the very religious fanatics who murdered Russians in Moscow, is an act of desperation. However, the strategic imperative for Putin remains the same, seize Ukraine and the high ground of Carpathia. This is what he sold to Russians by scaring them with the big bad NATO boogy man, a boondoggle that he obviously didn't believe, because he thought it would be a push-over. But, for this he is willing to expend any amount of military advantage and manpower. At first he was confident. Now he is worried, because if the war becomes unwinnable for Russia, he knows he is dead-meat. Ultimately, Russia does not matter to him, it is his precious hide that has always been his concern. The savior of the new Russian Empire? He is already going down in history with the likes of Idi Amin, Pol Pot and Gaddaffi.
