An example for me would be the word Gay. When I was young I knew at least 3 girls who's name was Gay and it also meant to be happy and care free.

Today it does not mean anything like its genuine dictionary meaning. Except for the word theft I have nothing against non heterosexual people.

I wonder what those girls have called themselves over the last 30 odd years ?

It only became an insult as a result of it being re defined. Before it was associated with homosexuality it was not possible for it to be used as an insult.

it was used as term to describe female sex workers and people that frequented sex workers, which given the period, were insults.
