Yes, history is informative, if not always entertaining...

But last night on the ABC's 'Nightlife" program, professor of mathematics  and  physics Brian Greene closed the very engaging  discussion - after looking at how life began, and possibility of  intelligent life elsewhere in the universe - with the observation that if humans are to survive on this planet, we will need to change from competition to co-operation.

Yes..."naive" he admitted, but "naivety is required to see the possibilities".

I was pleased he validated my naive  'marxist' belief in the common welfare and collective security. 

But Linus and his ilk are blind to the reptilian brain's effect on the cortex brain, and hence Linus believes eradication of war and poverty is impossible, indeed "naive".

In truth, whereas neanderthal competitive instincts might have served an evolutionay purpose when humans had to rely on our skills as hunters to survive, those same instincts are potentially disastous in a world in which warfare is increasingly directed by AI.....in the age of MAD, no less....

Yes I have some books on Marx by Groucho and Harpo.

The Manifesto maybe lying around somewhere still too. I remember one line in it to the effect of rescuing people from “the idiocy of rural life” and one clear trend, soon to be even stronger due climate catastrophes caused by AGW, is the flight from rural areas to the cities.

Perhaps worth repeating prof Greene's words again (regardless of Groucho's thoughts...) :
