Watch out for the snakes and blue tongues on the roads - Spring!!  Saw a rolled over snake yesterday - Blackie - and a Bluey done in today, just basking on the road for the heat.

Don't run over them... got out of the car to check the Bluey and a big 4wd with fat tyres came around the corner and squished him... 4WDs with fat tyres... and fat heads inside ... in National Parks they're called Little Dicks.

We seen a few blue tongue lizards around our yards here. It's terrible when they appear suddenly out of nowhere. They give everyone the fright of their life!

It's real weird ... you're there in the backyard happily hanging up the family washing in the glorious sunshine and then you notice what initially appears to be a snake. A few seconds later you realise it's a blue tongue lizard. But those few seconds can really terrify you and anyone else around.

I used to work in the shed and occasionally would hear this sliding dragging sound on the floor - it was Bluey coming through for a look-see... but it made me jump the first time... Black snakes are fine and won't attack you unless cornered... the Browns you need to steer clear of, but the Blacks hate them and apparently kill them, so if you've got Blacks just don't step on them or corner them.  They eat mostly rats and mice... maybe a chook egg....

Building a garden is an affirmation that you are going to be here to enjoy its fruits.  Leaping ahead in Spring this year with good soil - mostly clay and rock here and I imported some in built-up gardens.

Going to re-jig the septic and turn a second tank into an enviro and use it on lawns etc.... bloody thing fills up in two weeks and need pumping out all the time... grrrr... it was sold to us as an envirocycle.. put a macerator on it, then. you pump the top thin water into a second tank and let it work for a while then you can spray it out.  Can be retro-fitted to a mega worm farm - though I wonder why the worms don't drown.  Gonna channel the grey water into a separate tank and spray that on gardens - bit of soap never hurts and breaks down.

Bloody peacocks here ate the garden out one time- good stuff - now it's fenced off and they don't come here.... lady across the road feeds them apparently.... sometimes at night they call out like some woman being murdered... noisy bastards...

Wild deer here, too - think of the possibilities for a local restaurant... freshly gralloched venison.... today's special only $80 p.p. ...  baked peacock $100 p.p. .... can't waste one if it runs into a car ...

I love those blue tongue lizards -
they won't hurt you - they don't even have teeth.
I see very few of them because I think cats have killed most of them.
Some people keep them as pets.

Had a baby one once - nearly ran over it with the rideon mower and saw it - stretched on the back of my hand it brought 'aaaahs' from the womenfolk... one of Bluey's obviously.  Back into the garden with plenty of shelter from predators, designed that way and small birds and such used it a lot... and a couple of parrots.

I miss the farm.... bloody heart troubles....

Blueys eat snails - catch 'em and store 'em for winter food in a den.

I think Blue Tongues hibernate in winter.
They survive ice and snow in winter buried in the ground.

Submersible pumps aren't waterproof and burn out after a few years. So I fitted a 12v caravan water-pump on the outside with a plastic float valve (no rust). The slow pumping time equals the air-pumping time which is sufficient for oxygenating with no macerator. It gives low turbidity. Water pump $45.

Unfortunately I've not been able to follow the above post and I'm humble enough to admit this.

Gardening and watering go hand in hand. Is the above action related to water SAVING? If so I'd like to learn more. Our water bill just came through and it's over $800. I'm currently hiding it from my husband and will quietly pay it so he doesn't see it.

Unfortunately our last water bill came in at just under $1000. I hid THAT quarterly bill also. I feel awful about hiding these bills from my spouse as we never keep secrets from each other.

I need to seriously look at diverting water into my gardens from a bathroom or a laundry. It's a daunting task but I MUST sort this out.

Does anyone know how I can quietly and easily achieve this?

Note : I have a Bosch 10 litre front loader in our laundry and it does 2 to 3 loads a day. I think I should be able to re-use the final rinse water in the garden but I can't trap this water into buckets as that will involve me carrying heavy buckets of water out into the gardens (I have scoliosis and painful recurring sciatica issues).

There are various wastewater treatment tank systems which are used in rural areas. All the house water flows in and an electric pump adds air and then an electric water-pump removes the treated water. It can be chlorinated and sent through garden sprinklers or just by hose. There should be no residue in the tank and the water is nearly clear on the garden.

That's clever! I love it.

What about those of us who live in large houses in suburban Sydney?

Note : I've quietly asked my neighbours (the water bill is my usual prompt) and not 1 neighbour is doing anything clever or anything like what you've described.

It may need a fair area of garden to get Council to agree. Many have failed on the coast near rivers where nutrients and Cold Power make a mess.

Beautiful!

If only that IDEA could be reconfigured to accomodate suburban Sydney properties (so that the system didn't take up so much space AND didn't breach Council regulations). Surely someone out there is onto this.

But it won't reduce water bills except for garden watering. Like solar panels it would take a long time to return the outlay cost. The water treatment is the same principle as Council sewage plants but on a  small scale.

Oh. So I'm back to filling buckets of water then. ☹️
