Under the Greens policy, the state would go to a referendum to create dedicated seats for First Nations people in both houses of the NSW parliament.

How many seats would be set aside, how electorates would be divided and the model for the election, as well as a First Nations electoral roll, would be recommended by the treaty commission the party also wants established.

....

But Thorpe, who will attend the launch event on Tuesday, has called the referendum a “waste of money” and a “wasted exercise”. She has said she wanted treaty-making and truth-telling to be the priority before the voice was legislated.

Thorpe supports the First Nations advisory group the Blak Greens, which says the treaty is more important.

The group was also leading the NSW branch on its policy, Greens justice spokesperson Sue Higginson said.

“It is well past time for a truth-telling and a treaty process to be established so that all of us can be part of righting the ongoing injustice against Aboriginal people,” she said.

“The Greens, led by Blak Greens, will work to make this happen.”

Coe said she wanted to see progress on “all elements” of the Uluru statement including the voice.

Yeah - stuff the will of the people he serves... they need to be put in their proper place of subservience and do what they're told.

The will of the people is to close the gap. How to do it is not understood.

And what will her "truth-telling" be?

That blacks can "walk in both worlds"?

Like Price, none of them are facing up to the problem of welfare dependency.

Whereas Alan Kohler has correctly identified the problem is an economic, as well as a moral issue which has to be solved.

Quote:
“It is well past time for a truth-telling and a treaty process to be established so that all of us can be part of righting the ongoing injustice against Aboriginal people,” she said.

“The Greens, led by Blak Greens, will work to make this happen.”

...which will only deal with the moral issues, not the economic ones.

Latest poll is showing about a 60 - 40 vote in favour of "Yes".

However, the yes vote has been dropping a little bit over time and some of the yes vote is a "soft" yes.

Probably will get up at the referendum but may be closer than those in favour thought initially.

The Northern Territory’s Labor Chief Minister says she will not back any “race-based” intervention in besieged Alice Springs, despite the town’s two Aboriginal MPs demanding alcohol bans to curb out-of-control violence and calling the crisis a bigger priority than the voice referendum.

But a "race-based" amendment of the Constitution is a moral necessity.

Must be some odd poll then - haven't heard a yes yet.

The Chief Minister is complicit in the current  neoliberal market orthodoxy which determines who and who will not get a job, by the ability to compete in private sector markets.

Hence the massive welfare dependency among blacks in the NT.

Yes...she is contradictory, for reasons I explained above.

Whereas Alan Koher correctly says the issue is economic as well as moral , ie getting rid of the welfare dependency of an entire group, in this case - blacks.

Go for it - remove their fortnightly fix and their rent payments .... find them jobs instead .... maybe they could all earn a good living as orators raving about their disadvantage and such and how everyone else did it to them.

No voice will do that for them... only become another avenue for the same old demands for cargo cult.

Following on from my story - my brother, the opposite of my excellent self - decided early in life that acting like some Abo and saying he was the perpetual victim and should be paid for it etc and all without working for it, was the way to future prosperity.  The fact that he married an Abo woman might be in that, too.... and we possibly have some wood-pile of some kind, though it only shows in the skin and not the DNA test.

Well - his life could easily be a blueprint for the Abo lifestyle up to and including the early death largely due to substance abuse.... he made it to 59 - I'm 73 now and looking towards equaling that ancestor who lived for 109 years.... got too much to straighten youse lot out about before I go... face it - you desperately need me to lead you all out of your social autism.

I cannot possibly be the son of our parents or the brother of that .... don't even share their blood type....

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has dealt his leadership a catastrophic blow on Tuesday when he proved – beyond all reasonable doubt – that Australia does not need a racist clause inserted into the Constitution to listen to Indigenous voices.

Albanese was able to manage this with a quick hop on his private jet, landing in Alice Springs to meet with community leaders and elders, ‘listening to their voices’ and making a decision far quicker than any gene-tested Canberra bureaucracy.

As it turns out, all Parliament needs in order to listen to Indigenous voices is, well, a set of ears. (And maybe a private jet.)

well, there is a limitless amount of useful work to be done, and since society's necessities are produced by a small proportion of the population in the modern AI and IT enhanced economy, then govt ought to be acting as employer of last resort.

Agreed, but if the voice does get up, then complex issues re culture, sovereignty, welfare dependency, and the role of government, might be more thoroughly examined than would be the case without a more prominent black voice, leading to better outcomes.

Just might ....
