Extinction at the hands of a murderous ideology doesn't destroy the SELF-esteem of the survivors - witness Palestinians taking their case for a Palestinian state all the way to the UN, their self-esteem is intact. Same for Jews who survived the holocaust, those who maintained their sanity also maintained their self-esteem.
Whereas the 2-century-long creeping destruction of the Oz h-g culture did destroy morale, being more insidious for the natives - there was limited actual direct murder of blacks (disease was more deadly), just creeping dispossession of the h-g culture. Some are still fighting to reclaim that lost culture - an impossibility.
