‘A lot of anger’: a community shattered by the senseless death of Cassius Turvey

As investigations continue into the alleged attack, the Indigenous boy’s Perth community grapples with the loss

The senseless death of 15-year-old Cassius Turvey has shattered an Aboriginal community, who are in disbelief that the Noongar boy was allegedly attacked in broad daylight while walking home from school.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder after the alleged attack on the boy and his friends as they walked home in Middle Swan, a suburb of Perth, on the afternoon of 13 October.

After being rushed by ambulance to the hospital, he was treated and then sent home for eight hours before his condition deteriorated and he was rushed back.

Cassius was placed in an induced coma after suffering two strokes and a brain bleed and was in hospital for five days before family were forced to turn off his life support.

Despite the weight of grief his family is carrying, his mother, Mechelle Turvey, has paid tribute to her son and asked for justice in the wake of his death.

Turvey spoke with dignity and grace through her anguish on the steps of the courtroom where her son’s alleged killer faced charges.

She said she wished Cassius had been able to realise his standing within the community, despite his young age.

“He’s [was] such a leader. I wish my son recognised that he was such a leader,” she told the Guardian. “We need to give that empowerment and for them to recognise that they are leaders [who] even in the smallest, different ways, can make a difference.”

She said Cassius was much loved in the community for helping kids with their homework and running “a pay what you can” lawn mowing and gardening service with his friends.

Western Australian police have said they are investigating allegations of racial slurs being used, but have made clear they are not speculating about any reasons for the alleged murder. This week Noongar community leaders accused the WA police of downplaying allegations that there may have been a racial element to the alleged attack. During a nationally televised press conference, the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, also condemned the attack.

“This attack that was clearly racially motivated just breaks your heart. We are a better country than that and my heart goes out to the family and the friends,” Albanese said on Friday.

Noongar elders issued a statement urging change and action in the wake of the death.

“Our kids aren’t bad, but they are portrayed as bad. None of the kids are bad, they have a right to walk the streets,” the statement said.

It argues that calls by police and the premier, Mark McGowan, not to “speculate” over the nature of the attack were attempts to silence them and said that it should be responded to as a hate crime.

“The premier and police commissioner are telling us to be quiet,” the statement said.

The human rights lawyer and member of the UN permanent forum on Indigenous issues Dr Hannah McGlade said too often racism was swept under the rug by Australians.

“Racism kills. It’s not about just words and sticks and stones – there are people dying from racism,” she said. “Aboriginal people are told to be quiet, to take it..”

Emily Farmer, whose 14-year-old son was with Cassius when he died, spoke of her deep sadness and the impact of his death on the community.

“There is a lot of anger,” she said. “We mourn and we are concentrating on the justice side and stay[ing] together.

“The community as a whole, not just the Noongar community – there’s been great support for everyone … it’s overwhelming.”

The Noongar elder Jim Morrison said the community is anguished and parents are all holding their children tighter as they cope with the loss.

“When a tragedy like this happens it’s worse than ripples in the pond. It resonates to such a degree that it triggers the traumas of incidents of our history,” he said.

“I’ve had grown men crying; parents are scared to let their kids go to school and ride the bus alone because of this.”

The WA police commissioner, Col Blanch, said the investigations were continuing. Blanch announced further charges have been laid against the man who has also been charged over the alleged murder.

Blanch told reporters that the man is also facing assault and stealing charges over the 13 October alleged attack, after another boy who was present, aged 13, was allegedly struck with a metal pole in the face.

The commissioner has not ruled out other charges as the homicide squad continues to investigate the attack.

“The investigation is ongoing. I want to be very clear about this. The investigation is ongoing. There may be further charges, but we do have a lot of evidence to be going through and we will continue to do that,” Blanch said.

“I want to be very clear: justice for Cassius is my first priority.”

When asked by Guardian Australia if she believes the criminal system will deliver justice for Cassius, Turvey said she was not sure: “Who knows? But there is no harm in asking.”

mothra vibes with stories of anger, depression , sadness and people stuck in hell here on earth.

there is a way out.

you dont have to vibe with all those negative emotions.

you can use a tragedy to fuel an upward spiral

a boy was killed.
this is a call to action, not a call to wailing and anger and toxic negativity.

set up programs to teach martial arts to teenagers to protect them
teach yoga and meditiation to come to terms with lifes harsh reality
teach stoicism and resilience
use a setback for a community as an opportunity to reconnect to source energy
give every member of the community a copy of the tao te ching
get the community together at night to play community sports instead of drinking and ruminating on "how sad their lives are"
get the cops involved in street cricket and touch football

get some free off the track thorroughbreds and start a riding program.

do anything other then sit around and drink and get angry and listen to the hand wringers.

mothras title says it all

a lot of anger.

why do the left feed on toxic negative emotions
its soul destroying

As I pointed out on the other thread where you posted this same comment,
it's incorrect.  You need to look at the number of confirmed cases to reach
any sort of accurate conclusion.  You've just been sucked in by a crappy
tabloid newspaper headline from the boonies.

So you tell me the actual figures and that it's OK

The NT News is perhaps best known for its outrageous front pages and irreverent style. But today’s front page was arguably one of its most shocking yet.

The daily newspaper, circulated throughout the Northern Territory, today published new figures showing the annual number of abuse and neglect notifications for Territory children has increased to 24,743.

“One every 21 minutes,” its front page read in relation to territory children being neglected, sexually exploited or abused.

Of the 24,743 notifications, 2110 incidents were substantiated, revealing 1744 NT kids had been, were being, or were likely to be, abused, neglected or otherwise harmed, the NT News reports. It’s fewer than the 2209 proven incidents against 1910 Territory kids in 2016-17.

TODAY MARKS A YEAR SINCE THE RAPE OF A TWO-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN TENNANT CREEK - YET REPORTS OF TERRITORY KIDS BEING NEGLECTED, SEXUALLY EXPLOITED OR ABUSED ARE HAPPENING ONCE EVERY 21 MINUTES ON AVERAGE.

Yes - Blacks are killing one another in huge numbers compared to everyone else... their racism runs deep... way down past the tribal level.... if every group in Australia combined killed their women at the rate Aborigines do, the rate of death of women in family relationships would be between three and four women a DAY, not one a week.

Now - please explain your statement and support it with facts????
