It’s a Totally Nonfunctional Majority

Republicans handed President Biden two political gifts this week.
The first was Trump’s announcement of a third presidential run.
Whatever they might say publicly, Democrats are confident that
they could beat Trump again.

Even if Trump doesn’t win the Republican primary, there is a good
chance he will damage whoever becomes the GOP nominee in his
stead. Many Republicans evidently agree, and are distancing themselves
from Trump’s bid.

The second gift, perhaps a counterintuitive one, is Republicans taking
control of the House. For those focussed on progressive policy goals,
it’s a disaster. But given how the midterm picture appeared entering
this year, keeping the Senate and narrowly losing the House are both
huge accomplishments and an extraordinary stroke of political luck
for Democrats.

Every Republican lawmaker from a deep-red district now essentially
wields veto power—a dynamic that threatens to send the party down
politically unproductive rabbit holes.

"It’s a totally nonfunctional majority", Representative Adam Kinzinger
of Illinois, who is one of two Republicans on the 6 January committee
and is leaving Congress next year, said.

And a post-election survey by AARP found that voters 65 and older
swung sharply toward Democrats in 63 competitive House districts.
From July to November, Republicans went from an advantage of
10 percentage points with that age group to a deficit of three points
by Election Day.

"Americans age 50-plus once again proved that they are the
nation’s most powerful voters and they were the deciders in this
year’s midterm elections", said Nancy LeaMond, AARP Executive
Vice President and Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer. "They
were crystal clear that they want elected officials to work together
to address crucial issues that will ensure their health and financial
security. Elected officials and candidates can’t afford to ignore
this formidable group of voters and the issues that matter to them".

GOP members of the Oversight and Reform Committee held a news conference Thursday in which they alleged, among other things, that President Biden “personally participated in meetings and phone calls” regarding his son’s business exploits and that there was personal business conducted on Air Force Two while he was vice president.

Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who is poised to chair the panel beginning in January, called the president “chairman of the board” and a “partner with access to an office.”

Republicans, who released an interim report Thursday, said they identified more than 50 countries where the Biden family, often led by Hunter Biden, sought business transactions.

“To be clear, Joe Biden is the big guy,” Comer said. “This evidence raises troubling questions about whether President Biden is a national security risk and about whether he is compromised by foreign governments.”

Comer made it clear the investigation will focus on the president, not his son.

“We're not trying to prove Hunter Biden is a bad actor,” he said. “He is. If anybody wants to disagree with that, there's nothing we have to talk about. Our investigation is about Joe Biden. And we already have evidence that would point that Joe Biden was involved with Hunter Biden on this.”

Comer said Republicans on the committee have uncovered evidence of federal crimes by the Biden family or benefiting them, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, wire fraud, violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and Trafficking Victims Protection Act, tax evasion, and money laundering.

House Republicans said their findings are based on accounts from multiple whistleblowers, the contents of Hunter Biden’s purported laptop and financial documents.

Comer said that, according to a media report, the Biden family’s financial activity generated more than 150 suspicious bank activity reports. He said committee Republicans have obtained and verified two of them, one involving Hunter Biden allegedly paying an escort service.

Comer has renewed his call for the Treasury Department to turn over all suspicious activity reports for accounts involving the Biden family or businesses they’re connected to. His previous attempts have been rebuffed.

The US govt is functioning quite well.
Sure, the democrats may not be able to get any new bills through.
But, as it is, that may be a good situation.
The people have had their say.

Democracies the world over do function quite well.
Sure, not totally 'efficiently', but they continue, they survive. They persevere.

Same as England recently.

This renewed focus on what Hunter Biden did or didn't do is nothing
more than a desperate Republican bid to besmirch his father. It's
nothing more than a distraction.

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll shows that only 47% of Republicans
and Republican leaning independents would support Trump.

as support.

I know. And here in Australia it's even higher. Matty, Sore End and the rest of the morons - they all support abortion rights. Even their Dear Leader supports it.

And yet, they all give in to their overwhelming desire to obey. Ours not to reason why, no?
