Yes. Ridiculous scenario, and only typifies the mentality of the
average GOP member.
McCarthy failed to gain the speaker’s post in three more successive votes.
The empty speaker’s position means that the House is at a standstill:
Without sworn members, it is unable to perform oversight, pass bills or
set up constituent services.
In a spectacle on the House floor not seen in 100 years, unrelenting
hard-right lawmakers refused repeatedly to throw their support behind
McCarthy. This episode puts Republican divisions on vivid display,
grinding the House to a standstill and extending an ignominious start
to the new Republican majority, potentially foreshadowing an era of
dysfunction and disarray.
The 20 Republicans opposing McCarthy for the House speakership have
coalesced, for now at least, around Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida.
Without a speaker, the US House of Representatives essentially becomes
a useless entity. Because none of its members can be sworn in until a
speaker is appointed, there are no lawmakers to respond to an emergency
or a crisis, only representatives-elect.
With no rules adopted, the legislative process cannot move forward; no
bills can be passed or resolutions adopted.
—Thank you very much GOP; you continue to be the arseholes of American politics.
