Donald Trump said in May last year that the Uvalde school shooting
was a reason to arm law-abiding citizens, not disarm them.
The failed former president was a guest speaker at the National Rifle
Association, which held its annual convention that month in Houston.
Attendees at the NRA convention—including Trump—continued to deny
that guns were the problem and put the emphasis on school safety
and mental health.
He said at the conference: “The existence of evil in our world is not a
reason to disarm law-abiding citizens. The existence of evil is one of
the very best reasons to arm law-abiding citizens.”
This Monterey Park shooting again tragically illustrates the absurdity
of Trump's and the NRA's attitudes about firearms laws.
As a financial member of the NRA, and the recipient of its $5 million
election campaign donation in 2020, Trump should be held morally
accountable for these types of mass shootings.
On the other hand, the most significant US gun control bill in nearly
30 years has been signed into law by Joe Biden.
The new legislation is also significant because it's the first time in
decades that the reforms have received support from both Democrats
and Republicans. Historically, efforts to strengthen US gun laws have
been blocked by the Republican party.
The NRA—of course—opposed the bill, arguing that it would not stop
the violence.
