Some find that, based on their criteria, that there aren't as many DGUs compared to the number of guns spread amongst the population. On the other hand there are some that have found, again based on their criteria, that there are quite a few DGUs every year, far more than many were aware of.
The estimated number of DGUs therefore are all over the place.....a handful say that guns are used defensively as low as 50 thousand times a year, while many say guns are used defensively more often....as often as 4.5 Million times a year. All the other DGU studies, surveys, & polls used to determine the frequency of DGUs fall somewhere in between.
The largest & most comprehensive study/survey ever done on Defensive Gun Uses estimates that there are about ±1.7 million DGUs in America each year. That survey was done by a research company known as Centiment & is published in the Georgetown McDonough School of Business. SSRN Research Paper No. 4109494
See quote below: .....The online survey, which was conducted by Centiment in February and March of 2021, was based on a representative sample of about 54,000 adults, 16,708 of whom were gun owners. Georgetown University political economist William English, who commissioned the survey as part of a book project, presents its major findings in a recent paper available on the Social Science Research Network.
The overall adult gun ownership rate estimated by the survey, 32 percent, is consistent with recent research by Gallup and the Pew Research Center. So is the finding that the rate varies across racial and ethnic groups: It was about 25 percent among African Americans, 28 percent among Hispanics, 19 percent among Asians, and 34 percent among whites. Men accounted for about 58 percent of gun owners.
Because of the unusually large sample, the survey was able to produce state-specific estimates that are apt to be more reliable than previous estimates. Gun ownership rates ranged from about 16 percent in Massachusetts and Hawaii to more than 50 percent in Idaho and West Virginia.
The survey results indicate that Americans own some 415 million firearms, including 171 million handguns, 146 million rifles, and 98 million shotguns......
IMHO, we must depend on these estimates of DGUs because many go unreported simply because there were no shots fired, & because many the perps involved fled when they simply became aware their selected victim was armed.
Also, little attention is paid to many of these DGUs by the media because they either don't arouse viewership or readership, or they don't conform to the agendas the media have that attract the largest numbers of viewership & readership.
Therefore, it would make sense that we won't see as many reports of DGUs as we will of violent gun crime, which will always bring more attention & reporting.
Someone once asked this honest question of a gun owner:
"How would you like to be the one who has to tell 49 families that their little loved ones were murdered because you refuse to give up your guns?"
This honest answer was given by the gun owner with all sincerity:
"It is a deeply unfortunate tragedy, & we all sadly feel their pain, but that said, since there are over 500,000 cases of defensive gun-use annually, I'd rather have to deliver the heart breaking bad news to the 49 families, than to the 500,000+ families who's loved ones became victims because you took away their means to defend themselves."
