So lets not have mental health checks for anyone owning a gun because all gun owners are responsible....Let us allow people to build shooting ranges in secret with no regulation because they will be safe and their purpose is irrelivant....Owning a gun should be a right not a privilege so let us water down gun laws and make guns easier to get for anyone who wants them....Sounds like complete bullshit to me!!!

You didn't answer the question. If mental health checks don't stop police from committing suicide by gun, what makes YOU think it would be any different for gun owners? How often should they go through a mental health check? Every year, every three years? What happens if the stressor occurs between the checks?

Think phil, think.

It is a mistake to fashion 'mental' health - or mental 'health' - along the lines of physical health.  Overlaps are real but not determinants.

We are much, much more interchangeable physically, biologically than we are mentally, psychically, soulfully even as we have much more significant mental, psychic and soulful affinities.

These are not interchangeable aspects of our existence. Treating them as interchangeable - biology and psyche-  mechanises human beings. But we are not biological machines.

But that is the excuse used for the mental health checks.

Really....Did you bother to read the OP???

Quote:
Twenty people died from gunshot wounds in the state last year, and Police Minister Paul Papalia said mental health issues were involved in at least half of those deaths.

He hoped the changes would help reduce murders, gun-related family and domestic violence, attacks on police and suicides.

Did you read the link i provided from Police union saying WA police have highest suicide rate?

How many of those 20 deaths were police suicides?

I have no idea....Is that the argument you want to use to oppose mandatory mental health checks to obtain a firearm???

Huh Huh Huh

It's pretty clear to everyone reading this you have no idea.

Right we have 20 firearm deaths.

How many were murders? How many of those were done by licensed firearm owners with registered guns?

How many were suicides? How many of those were done by licensed firearm owners with registered guns? How many of those were police using service firearms?

Suicide is the 2nd worst case scenario for mental health since mental health was supposedly involved in half of those 20 deaths can we safely assume they were suicides?

Hanging is our most common method of suicide is shooting yourself any worse for end result?

If you take a gun away from someone and they use a rope to kill themselves have bedwetting hoplophobes like you really achieved anything?

Do you think making every farmer take a day off to travel into town to get this check is going to do anything apart from inconvenience them? What about farm hands travelling into town do they miss out on a days pay to satisfy bedwetters like you?

This lunacy will probably impact Aboriginal firearm owners in remote areas are you OK with taking their guns away if they miss a doctors appointment?

They have the data on licensing with firearm deaths perhaps you should search or ask for it and see how little this will do instead of dog whistling about firearm owners.

20 firearm deaths in WA

14 of them were suicides haven't found out how many were licensed with registered firearms and how many were with illegally owned guns. The police haven't given numbers on how many of those suicides were police.

389 suicides in WA last year 14 of them with a firearm.

About 90K licensed gun owners in WA.

90K legal gun owners will have to get mental health checks in a state that doesn't have the staff for mental health because of 14 suicides.

The other 375 people who might kill themselves without a gun will miss out on mental health care because mental health professionals will be busy dealing with 90K gun owners. If Mc Clown cared abut suicide he would boost mental health care for everyone instead of wasting limited resources on gun owners because of 14 suicides.

The already strained health budget will take a massive hit with 90K checkups billed to medicare.

Mc Clown is a dog whistling idiot and a hoplophobic bedwetter.

Yes i did read the fluent bullshit from a labor politician. The line of mental health checks for all gun owners exposed the gullible bedwetters in this thread. Politicians sold a perception of looking after your safety which none of you questioned and it falls apart with minor scruitiny.

There were 83 murders in WA only 3 of them done with guns. How is this going to reduce murders? Is a kitchen knife the most common weapon for murder?

There were 389 suicides with 14 of them by firearm. Suicide is the 2nd worst case for mental health how is forcing 90K gun owners to have mental health checks going to reduce suicides?

The police couldn't answer when the last time a policeman was shot by a licensed firearm owner. They have this data why did they not answer that question?

There is a long list of firearms they want to ban for being high powered yet i cannot find a case of any murder-wounding done by any of those mentioned.

What is gun related family and domestic violence is it the 2 cases mentioned in Hansard?

They mentioned 20 deaths for some reason the numbers don't add up. Wink

The one question that should have been asked is how many of these murders or suicides were done by licensed firearm owners and how many done with illegally owned guns. They have that data.

Looks like a massive waste of time and money forcing firearm owners to get mental health checks that will achieve little if anything.

There has been a total of 541 gun related deaths in WA over the last 2 decades which is an average of 27 a year....If people do not want to undergo mental health checks to obtain a firearm in WA then the question should be asked why....The reasons given appear to be it will achieve nothing and nobody has been murdered by a banned weapon....Even if a fraction of these innocent people were saved it would be an improvement!!!
