Nikki Haley announces run for president, challenging Trump

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, announced her candidacy for president on Tuesday, becoming the first major challenger to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican nomination.

The announcement, delivered in a tweeted video, marks an about-face for the ex-Trump Cabinet official, who said two years ago that she wouldn’t challenge her former boss for the White House in 2024. But she changed her mind in recent months, citing, among other things, the country’s economic troubles and the need for “generational change,” a nod to the 76-year-old Trump’s age.

“You should know this about me. I don’t put up with bullies. And when you kick back, it hurts them more if you’re wearing heels,” Haley said. “I’m Nikki Haley, and I’m running for president.”

Haley makes clear her intention to break with the Trump era. In addition
to calling for a new generation to step up, she urged Republicans to rally
around substantive issues and a candidate with appeal to mainstream America.

“Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven out of the last
eight presidential elections,” she said. “That has to change.”

Absolutely true. The main problem with that hope of course is the
influence the failed former president still has on a sector of the GOP,
despite his early onset dementia and poor general health.

Whilst Haley is a sprightly 51 years of age, the failed former president
will be 82 years of age at the end of his very unlikely next presidency,
or two years older than Biden is now.

I think it will!!!

Not a chance in hell, thankfully.

All she'll do is take votes away from DeSantis (which, let's face it, is probably the plan - Trump gets her to do this favour for him now, and then she gets to run again in 2028 with Trump out of the way).

Anyway, I wanna see Trump as the GOP candidate - watching him lose again will be very entertaining
