Of course it's optional. Turdie saw a thick cup at his local kennel and thought that made him an expert. Espresso drinkers have been using thin cups for decades. Cafe's in Australia like the thick cups because they get banged around a lot and the thinner ones are more likely to chip or crack. Only an idiot who drinks Espresso because he thinks it's trendy would ever claim its 'supposed to be thick '.
