Please Have A Safe 2023 Easter Break

From another topic (which is relevant to Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday)

In the Bible they used to crucify thieves.   Huh

Lisa Jones wrote on Apr 6th, 2023 at 11:18am:

Yes ... that was what the Roman Empire did around 2000 years ago in order to keep law and order in all the Mediterranean countries they controlled.

They crucified thieves and anyone they deemed was a threat to the stability of the Roman Empire.

In fact that’s why they crucified Jesus Christ. However the Romans were clever in how they went about it. They took the opportunity to pretend to allow the Jews to think they had the power to decide the fate of Jesus Christ. This made the Jews think they had control over legal process.

They didn’t of course.

It was just a mind game of sorts.

The Jews (led by proud and notable religious leaders and lawyers) argued FOR Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.

The Romans essentially responded with a quick “OK - whatever you reckon.”

And that’s how Jesus Christ found himself crucified btwn 2 other crucified thieves.

Those Roman soldiers who were on guard at the crucifixion had front row seats to the whole thing. The Roman soldier/guard nearest Jesus saw and heard everything Jesus uttered as He lay slowly bleeding to death in what has often been described by historians as a horrific and slow torturous method.

Anyway THAT Roman soldier soon realised the senseless brutality of what had taken place AFTER seeing and hearing what Jesus said whilst in so much unbearable pain and agony. The Roman’s remarks whilst on duty are captured in the Bible : Truly this man was indeed the Son of God.

He had a vision of the confronting reality of the event.

It’s a pity many so called Christians today - don’t.

Anyway - have a safe Easter. Please note the Easter we celebrate at this time has nothing to do with Jesus Christ. It’s a pagan festival that the Roman Catholic Church infused into its pagan based religious system in order to appease its citizens at the time so they could control the spread of Christianity under their official Roman rules and regulations. The Roman Catholic Church is merely that. Do not think for a moment it has anything to do with God and Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible. It’s an extension of paganism and only the uneducated and unaware think otherwise.

Whilst at Sydney Uni I undertook some subjects in Ancient History and Bible History. In these areas we were lectured by eminent atheist scholars who had no qualms about telling students what Roman Catholicism was really about and how it originated and framed/controlled History.

Anyway ... apologies for the long post.

Cheers

Are you watching "The Passion of the Christ" tomorrow? I have the DVD. It is the only religious-relevant movie I have in my collection that I would be willing to watch.

The Romans used crucifixion exclusively for the execution of anyone found guilty of sedition against Roman rule.

They did not use crucifixion for common criminals, that is a falsehood made popular by the new testament.

Indeed, an early 1st century composer  of the evolving NT - Marcion - rejected the OT entirely because he perceived Jehovah - "man of war" - was incompatible with Christ, the 'Prince of Peace'.

Catholicism has two strands of course,  based around 'poverty' and 'luxury'.

But as to Jesus Christ, where do you stand on homelessness and unaffordable rents in Oz, the result of the current Oz 'get rich quick' housing ponzi which is locking increasing numbers of people out of home ownership?

Crucifixions generally were for serious crimes in which the perpetrator either died, or did not do what they did again.

When someone is crucified, they are tied with rope to a cross. Then they get planted into the ground upside down and left for some time. After a while, the perpetrator either dies from his invertedness, or he suffers physically and emotionally. If he survives, he is let down to continue his life (humbled). Otherwise, he is left to die.

The idea of putting nails through the wrist and feet was considered barbaric, even for that time period. They also did not want to waste nails on executing people (regardless of whether they could dig the nails out afterwards).

No one was intended to survive crucifixion.

Crucifixion was the most humiliating and painful form of execution used exclusively for sedition against Roman rule.

The victim was fixed to a cross which was planted close to the gates of a town/city so all could witness the suffering of the seditionists, as if their screams of agony would not have been enough.

The cross was also planted such that the victims' feet were low enough to the ground to allow carrion birds and other animals to begin eating the victim alive.

Carrion birds, such as vultures, could perch on the crossbar and begin eating the victim's eyes, ears, face, and arms while they were still alive.

Death could take up to three days, probably extended if the victim's family and friends could muster the courage to avoid any curfew and remain at the cross to scare off carrion animals.

Those condemned who were tied to the cross upright, might well have starved or, more likely, dehydrated in a matter of 3 days. But, there were those that were tied to the cross as a punishment -- not just as an execution.

And Jesus would not have been crucified wearing a courtesy loin cloth to protect his dignity. All those crucified were stripped naked.
