Think about this. Several disgruntled nations led by Russia decide to stop using the US dollar. They plan a big conference with lots of media attention, but the leader of the second most powerful country in the world can't go, because he's afraid of being arrested. So he sends one of his lackeys instead.

I'm sorry, Issue, that would never happen. Vlad's a can-do leader, the kind of guy who pulls out all stops to get things done, full steam ahead. Can you really imagine him pulling out of the most important event on his global agenda because of some silly Western threat?

There's no question that Ukraine has lost a huge amount of territory and many thousands of lives. And they may very well be over-run by the heavily armed Moscovites, but the fat lady is yet to sing. It should be remembered that all this talk of a counter offensive was started by the copy hungry media last winter. It was obvious to anyone there would be a lot of fighting when the ground hardened. Governments and militaries do not announce actual operations ahead of time.

They could end the war today. Ukraine has no choice, and never did. At the moment, they are not attacking Russia. So, if they get to the point where Ukraine defeat is inevitable, I think I'd move out of Moscow.

The war costs nothing. Putin is not paying and is doing OK.
The Navalny FBK investigation estimated the cost of Putin's palace to be over 100 billion rubles (US$956 million) at 2022 prices. Russian people don't know nothing, don't own Russia and never have. Chinese cash for Russian oil is no-one's business.

The only way this can end is with Ukraine surrendering Crimea and the southern/southeastern oblasts to Russia, similar to the deal Finland had to take with Stalin.

The only question is: how to take the deal and not have it look like a Ukrainian capitulation?

The only answer: after a long stalemate and when both sides lose the will and the resources to continue.

I'd bet the West will end the supply of military materiel to Ukraine when Russia has exhausted all options other than nuclear - forcing a ceasefire and stalemate.

Ukraine may get to keep any territory it can recapture and hold in its current counter-offensive. After that, it's farewell to southern Ukraine.
