If the Russian Army is driven out of Zaporizhia, they will blow the nuclear power station in the process and blame it on Ukraine. Central Russia is down wind, but they are stupid and vindictive enough to do it, and casualties don't seem to bother them.

As for Ukraine about to collapse, people have been saying that since day one. Before the invasion, Ukraine had a small but effective military. With which they sank the Russian admirals flagship and his main landing ship. The Russian navy then ran away out of range, and have done nothing since.

Every day Ukraine is getting stronger, that is why Medvedev passed kidney stone when the F16s were announced from NATO donors and trainers. They will be in service before Russia can make anymore strategic gains, along with 41 updated Australian F/A 18s. So Ukraine is about to have a credible airforce.

Sure, Ukraine may be destroyed and the territory become part of Putin's grand vision, but Russia is going to bleed through its arse, and cough up a zillion rubles to do it.

So what has Putin and his long faced Junta achieved by invading Ukraine, apart form destroying their economy and sending thousands to their death or wheel chairs?

They have increased the membership of NATO, given the alliance a chance to clear old stocks of ammunition, and test new weapons from a position of observation.

One thing is certain, Crimea as a naval base is no longer tenable. After this war, Ukraine will bristle with anti-ship missiles, if it is not already. Even without Turkish permission, exit from the Black Sea in war with NATO would be impossible.

All of this due to the paranoia and megalomania of a dictatorship who uses a threat of NATO invasion as its only justification, an argument that is easily demolished looking at European pre-war economics.

And even a casual observer can see NATO would require a united and complete change of posture to even contemplate invading Russia. Its not going to happen, and I believe Putin has always known that.

You make that sound like a bad thing, dear.

Russia is run by a syndicate. Its spoils are divided and dispersed by the capos, led by Vlad, the Boss. There is no thought to Russian deaths or disabilities beyond the political calculation of what the Ruskis are prepared to cop.

Much easier to send the kids off to war than fight off a revolution. Vlad thought he could trust the generals to do their job. He also thought Ukrainians would suck it up, right?

Wrong. For the last few years, Vlad's had covid to keep things tight. He likes to have a nice little emergency up his sleeve. He came to power with the Chechen war, now he's created a whole new war to keep that power.

Genius. He's a peacemaker, no?
