It's not like Russia is going to pack up and move to the Bahamas after this is over.

They will remain neighbours and, like Stalin's Soviet Union before this, the Russians are going to need an outcome they can live with. Defeat and humiliation cannot happen - that would destabilise the entirety of Central Asia,

And, given even Navalny has little respect for Ukrainian sovereignty, this Ukrainian 'desertion' (as the Russians may imagine it) will remain in the Russian psyche for generations.

An event comming up that will be important, is the US election. Trump as president would be a "loose cannon" on the allied ship. But we cannot discount Russian stupidity either.

Russian hatred of Ukraine is not going to be anything like Ukraine's of them. As for destabilising Central Asia, they don't seem all that enthusiastic about Moscow anyway.

But the people who will never forget are those who lost money. Big money.

'China would be represented in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for a meeting of national security advisers seeking to agree on the main principles for a future peace settlement. Russia is not attending.

“China is willing to work with the international community to continue to play a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine,” Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson at the Chinese ministry, said in a statement'.

"Hedging is a risk management strategy employed to offset losses in investments by taking an opposite position in a related asset. The reduction in risk provided by hedging also typically results in a reduction in potential profits. Hedging requires one to pay money for the protection it provides, known as the premium".

Just going when Russia doesn't is part of the sea change.

It's not a matter of enthusiasm, it's a matter of the capacity to repel and reject Russian influence in favour of, say, CCP influence, which is already preparing to fill the potential power vacuum.

Short of that, in a post-Russian influence collapse, there is the potential of furthering the progress of militant Islamism - given the central Asian republics are mainly Muslim.
