My electricity is going up
Jul 12th, 2023 at 11:44am

Got an email from the Electricity company today.

From August 1st  2023 my electricity is going up in price:

+18% for ordinary electricity, +31% for hot water and +13% for service supply.

So much for renewables saving us money?
They destroyed Hazelwood power station in Victoria
but had nothing to replace it.

Man the barricades. Eureka is rising from the ashes.

Electricity company executives and shareholders have needy families too.

Thanks LTYC for sharing that important info with us.

The website says:

Why are my energy prices changing?

We typically review our prices every year in line with movements in our costs of supplying energy to you.

What makes up my energy prices?
Wholesale Costs
Energy retailers incur costs when they purchase electricity and gas from generators and producers to retail it to customers.

Network Costs
Network costs are the costs of transporting electricity and gas to your house. These costs include the cost of building, maintaining and operating the natural gas pipelines and electricity poles and wires that transport energy to your home or business.

Environmental Costs
Environmental costs are incurred by energy retailers to comply with government programs designed to provide incentives for energy efficiency and to support the development of renewable electricity.

Retail Operating Costs and Margin
Your electricity and gas prices include retail operating costs, including managing billing and payments and for the full range of customer services we provide, and a retail margin.

They didn't mention that "Electricity company executives and shareholders have needy families too."

I lived and worked in Houston USA ~12 years ago and lived in a one bedroom 80 square metre apartment (3 different locations in 3.5 years) and the electricity bill was never less that US$ 100 a month despite changing the provider once to try to reduce it. I never used aircon (I cheated by benefiting from the aircon users in adjacent apartments beside, below and above me and the hallway which provided enough heating and cooling) and used energy saving lights. It was a rip-off.

Bobby, your electricity provider has labeled its customers as steers and queers.

I would not mind so much, given that my pay rate increased more than $1/hr. I also get more work hours. As long as I am not going crazy with electricity usage, I should still have $100/month electricity bills.

Hazelwood was a terrible power station.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazelwood_Power_Station

We should have a built another coal fired power station and used the
low emission Anthracite coal from Queensland to run it
to tide us over till renewables were fully operating.
I hope we don’t get blackouts?

I'm not eligible for any of the rebates:

https://www.energy.gov.au/government-priorities/energy-programs/energy-bill-reli...

Victoria

Eligible cards and payments for existing rebates in Victoria are:

    DVA Gold Cards
    Health Care Card
    Low Income Health Care Card
    Pensioner Concession Card.

If you hold one of these cards you are eligible for the existing Victorian Electricity concession scheme.

Newly eligible cards and payments for bill relief in Victoria are:

    Carer Allowance
    Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
    Family Tax Benefit.

If you hold or receive one of these cards or payments you will be contacted by DVA from September to November 2023 or by Services Australia in September 2023 to tell you what you need to do.

Why?

CSIRO and AEMO’s GenCost 2021-22 report released today confirmed that wind and solar are the cheapest source of electricity generation and storage in Australia.

The report confirmed renewable energy sources will continue to be the cheapest sources of new electricity generation in Australia, although cost reductions could be impacted over the next 12 months due to inflationary pressures.

The report concluded that after the current inflationary cycle ends that wind, solar and batteries are all projected to keep getting cheaper still.

Only an idiot would say that

See if you can guess why no one wants to pay to build a coal fired power station?

Why?

A decade of the libtards hamstringing renewables and pushing coal is why

So you don't believe in a free market? If the returns were there... they wouldn't have to be subsidised. Roll Eyes

It's a very intelligent idea.
It would have given us a buffer until renewables were fully installed and working properly.
Now we are in unknown territory.
China is building 100s of coal fire power stations - go figure?
We only needed one coal fired power station.
