Georgia charges Trump with illegally trying to overturn 2020 loss

Aug 14 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump was hit with a fourth set of criminal charges on Monday when a Georgia grand jury issued an indictment accusing him of efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

The charges, brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, add to the legal woes facing Trump, the front-runner in the race for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election.

Prosecutors brought 11 counts against Trump and his associates, including forgery and racketeering, which is used to target members of organized crime groups.

Prosecutors charged 18 other people, including Mark Meadows, Trump's former White House chief of staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman.

All 19 defendants in the Georgia 2020 election subversion case are facing racketeering charges, according to an indictment handed up Monday. 

CNN previously reported that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had been weighing bringing charges under RICO — the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act — as part of her investigation into efforts by Donald Trump and allies to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election result. 

The indictment includes a more than three dozen different charges for the 19 defendants, but the thread that connects all the individuals is that they’ve been charged under RICO.

Former prosecutor Andrew Weissmann explained that due to Georgia's law on criminal bail, Trump would have to prove that he poses no flight risk, risk of witness intimidation, or risk of committing another crime before he is released on bail.

The statute specifically states that the defendant can only be released on bail if they pose "no significant risk of intimidating witnesses or otherwise obstructing the administration of justice."
