Report from Antarctica #3
Aug 25th, 2023 at 9:30pm

Driving to a nearby village there were lambs in the green green fields on either side of the road.

Not a penguin, not a seal not a solitary skua in sight.

I guess I really am 5500Km from Antarctica.

More and more wattle in bloom, broom too, probably.

Drove 75Km yesterday and 75Km back and except for a stretch of 30 seconds there was flowering wattle in sight. Weird, for Antarctica, what?

Those lambs—think might buy half a one to go on the smoker or maybe just charcoal grill it? Get a shitload of rosemary, add some to the charcoal, brush the lamb with olive oil and garlic and other herbs.

Getting the makings of a herb patch together tho all still in the pots they came in. Tomorrow all the trees and shrubs on the block will be cut down, then to arrange a Cat or similar to level the block, demolishing the rockery with roses, the rickety, strongly leaning Hills Hoist, the compost bin, the old chook pen and even the tool shed will be demolished. Then can start planting my trees, my vege garden and herb, rhubarb and asparagus patches.

With that will be my 3 black currant, 2 red currant, 1 white currant and 1 cape gooseberry bush and three cherry trees and four peach trees.

All the bits of fencing will be pulled down and a drive shifted giving a space like 25m x 20m for all this—plenty of space!

Down the back behind the house and a shed will be another generous space—enough for a greenhouse or polytunnel and raspberries. New chook shed and run and part of the backyard fenced with 1.8m hardwood fence with trellis going up another 500mm—secure space for Socks to run around the fruit trees (tho might kick her out and let the chooks forage there in spring, eating any codlin moth grubs coming out the soil.

The garage well away from the house—how good and generous a greenhouse that would be? Replace colorbond with glass or poly sheets. Yowzer! But I guess it will become my meadery/cidery and maybe brewhouse if I can get a small system set up.

Funny things to do in Antarctica, eh?

We did a 150km round trip yesterday along the
South Gippsland highway, and in a lot of stretches
there were wattles in full flower—plus paddocks full of
shorn sheep.

The wetlands near Sale are the fullest I've seen them for a long time...
