People that wanted taste, head retention and body preferred my Packs.

Heh, had some pensioner customers, would tell me shyly “I bought the kit from the super market” which I thought sensible—I could not buy at the scale of supermarket chains! I would tell them to buy the Coopers Lager kit—just light malt extract, mildly hopped to 21IBU and to buy them when they were fresh—close to two years before the Best Before date.

This then could be built on with my Packs:

Level 1 Pack: 75% dry malt extract plus 25% dextrose to stop the beer being gluggy. This Pack needed to be added to 2L cold water then brought to a boil and boiled as vigorously as they could manage for 5 minutes. Great opportunity to add some flavor and aroma hops. LOTS of “home brewers” just want to dump the can kit and bag of mostly dextrose and dried corn syrup into the fermenter, quick stir and add boiling water etc—lazy bastards making crap beer at low cost and less effort. That wasn’t me! These Packs would need like an hour to be turned into wort including clean up

Level 2 Pack: Again, generally 75:25 dry malt extract and dextrose but this time the boil was for at least 15 minutes with 2-3 lots of hops added and often some grain to be steeped, carefully and minimally sparged and that wort added to the kettle. Looking at 2-3 hour long brew session.

Level 3 Pack: Like level 2 but 1-3Kg of grain to be mashed and an hour long boil essential. You would be talking 3-4 hours of brewing including clean up.


Full mash was our customers ordering grain to be ground and hops to be weighed and bagged. Looking at a 7 hour brewday.


So you could make the best beer possible for your level of expertise but would cost more and take more effort than your “kit and kilo” rubbish still way too common here. I made a good income from the shop.
