there is no aboriginal race as aboriginals have chosen to define themselves extraracially
recognition and identification are the bedrock signifiers of aboriginality, not ancestry or shared phenotypic and genotypic markers
aboriginals are in effect post-racial, so making fun of them or excluding them definitionally cannot be racism
Creating the myth of race, and then categorising peoples by 'race' was a European explorer-nation project to justify superiority over and conquest of non-European peoples.
Aboriginal peoples define themselves as they always have: along tribal lines. Their territories, who they can breed with, who they can associate with and who they can shun are based on tribal affiliations not 'race'.
Breeding with Irish, Chinese or Maori was never part of those tribal lines.
So Denton's point is well taken. You can have one half Aboriginal grandmother and still self identify as 'fully' Aboriginal - clearly not about ancestry, genes, tribes.
Hunter-gatherer societies are often not prudish about sexual interaction with strangers deemed close friends of the tribe.
You can self-identify (by definition) with anything. The question is: should this self-identification be taken seriously enough to warrant legal recognition?
That is so stupid on so many levels.
Sexual relations are regulated among traditional Aborigines more than almost anything else. Kin, skin, clan, who can look at/**** whom is elaborately regulated, transgressors punished/killed.
'Warrant legal recognition' - the big pit of hell remote Aborigines live in is precisely the lack of accepted law. The old law is no longer recognised or even knwon, the new law is rejected or flaunted and transgressed as 'resistance'. So they are lawless - violence, abuse, rape are abundant because there is no law.
You might like to read about the Bounty and the issues Bligh had getting his crew motivated to leave Tahiti. Seems the crew preferred the sexually accommodating Tahitian women a bit more than the British Navy's rum, buggery and the lash. Ultimately the mutineers ended up with Tahitian women. Their descendants are still alive today.
All around the Polynesian Pacifica, there are stories of how sexually accommodating Polynesian women could be, so long as the tribal elites considered you a friend - particularly if you provided the tribe with goods and weapons.
NZ Maoris had similar interactions with the British. Governor Grey in NZ himself maintained consensual sexual relationships with Maori women.
Consensual sexual interactions with Native Americans occurred often and in similar circumstances to the Polynesians.
Certain Aboriginal families originating from the central west coast of Western Australia bear the surnames of European sailors marooned on the coast in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their Abpriginal descendants have European DNA markers coinciding with that time period.
Complex Aboriginal laws governing sexual relations are mostly predicated on the prevention of inbreeding and/or ongoing tribal rivalries.
