The concept of "nations" among Aboriginals seems to have come from an exposure to American "Cowboy and Indian" movies. It certainly does not predate the "talkies."

They were clans, not tribes, and had nothing to trade. Recently, attempts have been made to say there was a trade between the Malays and Aboriginals is trepang. Evidence is lacking, they lived in poverty and most had a very poor diet, except were fish was available. A concerted effort is being made to give them the dignity or more advanced cultures.

The Tribes prefer to be called by their Tribal name.... not 'native Americans' or anything.
