Grin Grin Grin. Right... the only problem with your argument is that, most aborigines are now no longer hunter and gatherers.  Some may still have the skills to live off the land, however, its not the entirety of their livelihood.   You can be assured, when the land is given, it is not to like its going to be in individualised title, like the way we own our homes.    It would be in a form of lease, from the government - the land will still remain as Australian, with lease term of 99 years signed to a particular local aborigine council.

So no longer being a HG entitles you to title to land?  I own half of Europe then.... if I can first wrest it from the inhabitants and then hold it...

All the rest about leases - that's not what ANY of them are saying.... they want it - they want it now - and they want it forever.

City slicker... you're dreaming..   Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin

You are so greedy!   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy. You are already living in Australia, land taken away from the aborigines.  Its mineral wealth funds part of your health care, transportation, and education.  And you want more?  MORE?   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

All national parks etc are owned land - owned by the people as a whole and in use daily as national parks.... NOBODY has any right to even suggest they are 'unused non-private land' and just give them away etc.... for a government to do so is the vile imposition of despotism ....so where is Danny Boy going to get this 'land' to give to the Cheers down there?  Blue Sky Properties Inc?

So its okay for the colonialist to come to Australia, drive the original occupants of the land off from their homes.  Give those lands to each other to farm and mine.   But  not okay to give some of it back.

Pure hypocracy.

So you will be giving your home to an Aboriginal and leaving leaving this land for ever? No, thought not. Pure hypocrisy.  Roll Eyes

Oh Belgarion, I am not perfect.  I am just as terrified at my home being given away as the terror that was felt when Aborigines were driven off their homes for 60 thousand years.   I do not pretend to be able to undo the entirety of that mistake, but I do believe handing back some parts of public owned lands back to its original owners.   Smiley

By this logic I should be able to claim the land taken from my ancestors by the Danes, The Angles, the Saxons and the Romans?  I imagine my ancestors felt terror then which certainly entitles me to compensation now.

So... if you are not Danish, the anglos, saxons or Romans, ... are you native Irish or Scottish?   Smiley

Not at all.

Quite a lot of it has been given back. And a lot of other benefits of the colonists have also been shared freely with Aborigines.

Nothing was given back, and never will.  See my other posts about what is really native title.   And to benefits from the government, well most of them goes to middle man, very little gets filtered down to the people.

A couple of things:

The middlemen are Aborigines. That they diddle their rival clansmen is what they have been doing for ever. They can continue to do so because they are indulged by not being subjected to the same regimes of accountability and responsibility as other Australians.

The Aborigines had no land ownership, as you point out, so native title comes, within the Australian legal system, closest to what they had before it. They cannot simultaneously reject the Australian legal system and demand that it pays them compensation in purely non-Aboriginal but Australian legal terms (ie financial compo). They cannot saddle two incompatible legal systems. They can cultivate their stories and belieft but even a lot of that is totally unsustainable, like their beliefs in magic, witchcraft or that they all spring from the earth and a load of other superstitions and hooey.

The Stone Age and with it tribal Aboriginal life are over, gone, never to be revived.
