ATHEISM

1. Believing that there is no God?

OR

2. Not believing that there is a God?

Why on earth did you feel compelled to actually repost this meaninglessness?

It’s meaningless is it? Mad Methra?

Yes it's meaningless. At best it's a pathetic attempt to sheer of "atheists" who think god is dead over there not being one ... at worst it's an exercise in semantics.

Either way, meaningless.

What i do know, Larry, is that by your own god's decree, you are doomed.

I’m looking around atm in this topic and only you and I have studied/graduated with Uni qualifications. As such I’m more than happy to discuss this further with you.

Note : I will continue to post over/make fun of Drunk and Methra - only because I’m not at all interested in wasting my time with long term dole bludging brain damaged (through alcohol and/or drug abuse) multi Mong trolls.

What's the difference, apart from negating the action in one sentence and the predicate in the other.

We have no bananas.
We don't have bananas.

Big difference.

There’s a logical difference between believing that there is no God and not believing that there is a God.

To use your example Frank:

I believe (we have no bananas)

vs

I do not believe (we have bananas)

There’s a difference between

I believe (not-p).

vs

I do not believe (p)

Logically where you place the negation makes a world of difference.

👆 My husband and I have these conversations all the time (and yes we both studied history and philosophy of science at Uni)

Rubbish.

Though I have to admit that in later years I had been declining to employ new Uni graduates in technical positions.

Yes but then 'I Believe' is not a negation.

The difference here is that 1 directly states the position and the other uses a negation to do the same thing. Both ways the result is sorry but no bananas for you.

They are both beliefs.  They differ in the objects or substances of their beliefs.

Theists believe that there is the physical world and it is a predicate in some way of a metaphysical world, entity or being.

Atheists believe in a physical world that is self-creating without being a predicate of anything beyond or alongside itself.

https://www.britannica.com/topic/atheism

Generally atheism is a denial of God or of the gods,
and if religion is defined in terms of belief in spiritual beings,
then atheism is the rejection of all religious belief.

atheism, in general, the critique and denial of metaphysical beliefs in God or spiritual beings. As such, it is usually distinguished from theism, which affirms the reality of the divine and often seeks to demonstrate its existence. Atheism is also distinguished from agnosticism, which leaves open the question whether there is a god or not, professing to find the questions unanswered or unanswerable.

The dialectic of the argument between forms of belief and unbelief raises questions concerning the most perspicuous delineation, or characterization, of atheism, agnosticism, and theism. It is necessary not only to probe the warrant for atheism but also carefully to consider what is the most adequate definition of atheism. This article will start with what have been some widely accepted, but still in various ways mistaken or misleading, definitions of atheism and move to more adequate formulations that better capture the full range of atheist thought and more clearly separate unbelief from belief and atheism from agnosticism. In the course of this delineation the section also will consider key arguments for and against atheism.

See? You need the concept of God to define atheism. It is inevitable since God is in the very word, atheism. You have to conceptualise what you are not believing in.

No. You do not. Although it could be argued tot that reach a standpoint irrespective of knowledge that there is such a thing as god is impossible.

As i previously said, the prefix "a" doesn't mean againt, it means without.

One does not need to stand against god to disbelieve in it. One requires being taught to believe in it in the first place.

It's possible to not 'believe in' Zeus, without being 'anti-Zeus'.

There's a difference between atheism and antitheism.
