Incorrect. Religion was used to intimidate people into compliance.

Again, you are mistaking religion with spirituality.

Blue hairs people - what can you do?

Europe escaped pre-civilisation tribalism through a common religion, as did the Arabs.

Animism and manism (in modern parlance - spiritualism) are the 'religions' of pre-civilised, hunter-gatherer, nomadic peoples.

So you are cool with the Rainbow Serpent but not with Islam.

I'm cool with both.

What are you not cool with, then?

Explain the difference. You h ave been to uni, you should be able to do it easily and well.
Go.

One is an organised belief in a god or gods ... the other is a belief that there is something beyond that which we perceive with our regular senses.

Were you unaware of this?

You know what the empirical evidence says? That over the course of human history, religion has done far more to hinder and harry humankind than it has come even close to in providing benefits.

We exist despite religion, not because of it.

Aww, please... Genghis Khan? Hitler? Stalin? Mao?

As i previously said, there are exceptions. They are the overwhelming minority however.

Are they? Who or what is in the majority?

You're out of your depth.

Religion has been with humans since the dawn of civilisation and it bound peoples to cultural ideas who would otherwise have had little in common and little reason to cooperate with each other.

What? People would have had no reason to cooperate with each other if it weren't for religion? Had little in common?

Existence and the means to sustain it not good enough for you? It certainly was for most of human history.

Religion, as opposed to simple spirituality, has been used for the most part throughout human history as a mechanism by which to control and assert dominion.

I'm seriously not getting the impression from any part of this thread that it is i who is out of their depth.

Why were the Arab tribes concerned when Emperor Justinian almost reunified the eastern and western Roma empire? What role did Islam play in uniting the Arab tribes against perceived threats from the north?

Religion in civilised society was absolutely necessary to overcome dangerous and lethal clanism and tribalism.

Precisely. Control and dominion.

God knows what you imagine you're arguing with.

No control and dominion in Aboriginal or Islamic religion?

Really?

The difference between pre-civilised clan, and tribal, lethal animosities and the bonding effect that religion provided those peoples of civilised societies.

So it is organised and un/a/disorganised belief.

And Aboriginal 'spirituality' is your example of unorganised, free, individualistic, whatever is your bag, man, 'spirituality'.
