Happen to have some Coopers stout and lamb shanks but no wine. Do have most of the stuff except Worcestershire, maybe teriyaki marinade will do?

Any alcohol into meat does not improve it beyond making it another 'alcoholic' novelty from and for the drunks.

Lamb shanks are no longer an "economy" meat product. 
I checked an independent butcher and was horrified to
find them priced at  $19.99 per kg. Two shanks weigh
around 1kg, which makes them $9.95 each!

When I was a kid in the 1950s, our local corner shop
butcher used to give one to mum for no charge with
a leg of lamb, as they were sold super cheaply as dog
bones back in the day.

Now that all these fucking so-called "celebrity" chefs
are flogging them on TV, they're now the same price
as T-bone steak (on special at Coles or Woolworths).

It's not all celebrity chefs, thats what happens with all food. Cheap cuts become mainstay when the dearer cuts become to expensive. The more mainstay the more they cost as demand rises.
I recall chicken wings were almost given away at one stage,  now they're almost as expensive as chicken breast.
