Netanyahu says Hamas leader’s demise is ‘the beginning of the end’ in Gaza, but it’s unclear who will now call the shots in hostage talks and whether a diplomatic push could work.

The chance killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on Wednesday represents “the beginning of the end” of the war in the Gaza Strip, claimed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It’s not entirely clear what he meant by the bold statement, but then again, it hasn’t been clear throughout the entire war how the IDF’s remarkable tactical successes can lead to the end of Hamas rule in Gaza, the disarming of its terror army and the return of the hostages.

The elimination of Hamas’s most dominant figure could open a small window of opportunity to achieve Israel’s elusive war aims, none of which have yet been secured. Senior US officials — including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken — both indicated that they see a chance to end the war in the near future, and many world leaders echoed that sentiment.

Deadly strike in northern Gaza: At least 87 people have been killed and more than 40 injured in an Israeli strike on Beit Lahia, according to the ministry of health in Gaza. Graphic footage showed the bodies of several children among the dead, many with extensive injuries.

At least 87 people were killed in an Israeli strike on Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, overnight Saturday, the health ministry in Gaza says.

The number killed included 27 bodies retrieved so far and 60 people under the rubble. More than 40 people had been injured, including a number of very critical cases, the ministry said.

CNN cannot confirm the figures but they match the numbers provided by Kamal Adwan hospital, where victims have been taken.

A woman crying amid the damage said: “We were sitting and talking to each other when suddenly a large concrete block fell on us. What remains? They have killed all the people.”

“The [Israelis] directed people to go to Beit Lahia and bombed them there,” she said.

One unidentified man at the scene said Sunday morning that there were displaced people in four homes that were destroyed.

“We call on the international community to end the war,” he said. ‘We beg you, we are civilians with no connection to anyone. We demand that you stop the war.’”

Video and images from the scene show frantic efforts overnight to rescue those trapped and recover bodies, with no machinery and little light. Many of the bodies being retrieved or brought into Kamal Adwan hospital were those of children. Daylight images appear to show that two or three substantial apartment buildings were flattened.

CNN has asked the Israeli military whether the site of the airstrike in Beit Lahia was within one of the areas included in an evacuation order.

Remember: The Israeli military has issued a number of evacuation orders for northern Gaza this month where it has renewed its ground offensive.

Nearly 100 people, including 20 children, have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a single residential block in northern Gaza, the city’s civil defence agency said.

The strike – which the US labelled “horrifying” – hit a five-storey residential building in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza on Tuesday.

93 people have been killed and another 40 people are missing, with rescuers scrambling for survivors, according to the Gaza government media office.

20 children were among the dead, medics said.

“The number of martyrs in the massacre of the Abu Nasr family home in Beit Lahia has risen to 93 martyrs, and about 40 are still missing under the rubble,” Gaza civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP.

At least 93 people are dead or missing after an Israeli air strike on the town of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, the Hamas-run health ministry says, in an attack that the United States called "horrifying".

Rescuers said a five-storey residential building was hit, and videos on social media showed bodies covered in blankets on the floor.

The Israeli military said it was "aware of reports that civilians were harmed today [Tuesday] in the Beit Lahia area". It added that the details of the incident were being looked into.

More than 42,924 people have been killed in Gaza,

according to the health ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its figures.

Israel is not allowing international journalists from media organisations, including the BBC, independent access to Gaza, making it hard to verify facts on the ground.

Israel continues deadly strikes on southern Lebanon, with many women and children among the 15 people killed in the latest attacks in Sarafand and Haret Saida near Sidon city.

At least 143 Palestinian people were killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza on Tuesday, with 132 of those killed in the besieged north of the war-torn territory, medical sources told Al Jazeera.

Media in Israel report that at least 33 Israeli soldiers have been killed in fighting in southern Lebanon since the start of the month amid Israel’s ground offensive into Lebanese territory.

In Gaza, at least 43,061 people have been killed and 101,223 wounded

in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023.
An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks and more than 200 were taken captive.

In Lebanon, at least 2,787 people have been killed and 12,772 wounded in Israeli attacks since the war on Gaza began, with 77 killed in strikes across the country on Tuesday alone.
