Just for clarity, the cross you see is put there because the pouch has been checked for joeys. You see it on marsupial road kill. It's a sad but uniquely Australian thing.

Oh okay. It’s a first I’ve seen this. And so close up. Was it council workers or police that put the cross on it?
I wonder if someone reported it as injured wildlife? I usually do. From injured big kangaroos, mischievous ring tail possums, and bees that have lost their way or queen bee.
Even in storms we have frightened dogs that turn up on our door step!
So I phone local vets to find owners.
It’s kind of a privilege to have wildlife or domestic animals find solace here.

So…. Day two and the body is still in driveway. We just can’t drive on without stopping to pay respects by feeling sadness.
I phoned the shire about when the removal will happen…and they said it’s not their job, and put me through to Vic Roads.
I asked, who would’ve put the red cross on body of kangaroo.
It was likely someone called wild life rescue and they came to check if still alive or if carrying a Joey (like Mothra explained earlier) but it’s Vic Roads job to remove its body.
So let’s see how long this takes as watching it decompose near my letter box is not much fun.

We have the means but giving the authorities a chance to do so since we pay exorbitant rates and registrations. But if they don’t and push comes to shove my husband will do so. Not very nice but…

By you I meant you or someone in your family. I understand you may not like to pick up dead animals.

I would just go remove it if it was near my property. Even if i just dragged it out further into the bush (if you are near bush)

I know you're a traveller Sophia, it's not a bad idea to travel with a can of bright spray paint. That way if you hit anything or see a fresh kill, you can check the pouch yourself and leave a marker for future travellers. It breaks your heart to look through the pouch of a dead animal, it's nice to be able to spare someone that.

But i know what you mean about animals just turning up. We seem to have a flashing light on outside. Everything from dogs to chickens has turned up here in one state or another. It is indeed a blessing.

I do many things that are not my job. When I walk around if i see a piece of rubbish on the ground and I am near a bin, I pick it up. If I see someone who is in difficulties, I will help, it may be just run over and open the door. If I see a woman being beaten I intervene. If a see a hazard in the middle of the road, if it is safe, i will stop and move it. There are many things we as people do to make the society work.

Don't complain if moving a dead kanga is not the priority of those whose job it is to move it. If it bothers you, move it else don't complain and wait patently enjoying the smell and view of decay.

Have you ever been to Egypt or India. They litter the place because it is someone else's job to pick up the rubbish. The society is just a shithole in all public places.

Love the responses here. When the term 'dumb animal' was coined it was the kangaroo they had in mind. To stupid to stay still when a vehicle approaches they try to escape by keeping pace with the vehicle and then as often as not jump into its path.

If you live in the country then it's your job to remove any road kill that offends you, not the councils, although they will probably arrange the removal of something large like a horse or a cow if it is proving inconvenient.
