Catholic Church’s Delaying Tactics in Abuse Cases
Nov 3rd, 2023 at 2:32am

The NSW attorney general, Michael Daley, has
ordered an urgent briefing on the landmark High
Court decision over the Catholic church’s tactics in
abuse cases.

The High Court on Wednesday delivered a damning
judgment against the church over its use of permanent
stays to permanently halt survivors’ claims.

The church has been using stays routinely where
perpetrators have died, or where other witnesses or
documentary evidence do not exist, allowing it to
defeat active claims before courts or under pay
survivors during settlement negotiations.

In one case, the Marist order attempted to use the
death of the prolific abuser Brother Francis William
Cable last year to stay a case brought well before his
death. That prompted allegations Marist had simply
sat on its hands, failing to investigate the allegations
prior to Cable’s death, and then using his death to
claim it couldn’t receive a fair trial.

Cable was charged with 25 cases of sexual abuse
against boys aged 13 to 14 years of age.

All churches have exposed themselves [sic] as
attempting to pervert our judicial system and the
course of justice over the years.  At least the High
Court has (hopefully) ended that nasty ploy.

What an incredible topic and post.

It’s high time Catholicism was exposed for what it truly stands for : a haven for those who perpetrate depravity and abuse.

Unfortunately, I've also read reports of similar
cases of paedophilia within the Anglican church,
and the Salvation Army's boys homes—particularly
one at Bayswater in Victoria up until it closed in 1987.

It would seem that religious organisations and child
abuse go hand-in-hand... literally.     Angry

Catholics are the worst because of the stupid insistence that priests be celibate.

Agreed. It’s also anti Scriptural.

There is no doctrinal reason for it.

Way back in the Dark Ages, somewhere back there priests were leaving church property to their sons. Hence the edict of chastity so-called.

Not many church lands left compared to back then, a proper system of land titles etc so why the hell not let priests marry?

A related issue—women really need the right to be ordained. In some remote communities women act as priests but can’t hold confession or give Communion. No way to run a business!
