I got my dads watch collection, all 60s to 80s Seikos. Not worth much, but simple and gorgeous.

One very much like this

https://i.ibb.co/d6vG7DP/Screenshot-2023-11-10-at-21-36-32-Seiko-1967s-GRAND-SEI...

My 21st present from my sis was an automatic Seiko. I gave it to my youngest son when we were cleaning up after the flood. Still ticking away.

They're such nice items to pass down. I also like Seiko, they make some gorgeous watches.

Can you tell the time?      Embarrassed

Yes.

It's time you answered my questions.

Can you use an abacus?  - I used to know how but I forgot.

Can you drive a horse & buggy?  - I'm sure I could but I never have.

What is the time on this watch?

From Quora, but I agree

Learning to read an analog clock does have a developmental advantage. When learning to tell time, it give a much clearer picture of how seconds make up a minute, minutes make up an hour and hours make up a day.

Having to watch and bide one's time while the second hand goes around 5 times for five minutes to pass gives one a better sense of how much time is in a minute. I know there are some digital clocks that count out seconds, but that vast majority do not have that feature.

Learning to read an analog clock is also a lesson in fractions. Using a clock face makes it much easier to explain what a half an hour is. More importantly if it is currently 1:50 and I say I will arrive in a half an hour, it is a lot easier to figure that I will arrive at 2:20 if you can glance at an analog clock.

With that I will segue into the final reason. There are many, many time related phrases that rely on understanding how to read an analog clock: “ half-past nine,” “a quarter to two,” a quarter passed the hour.” Learning to make the thinking shifts necessary to understand that a “quarter TO two” is different than a “quarter PASSED two” is an important developmental skill. It is also important to know exactly what those phrases mean when others use them.

Learning to read an analog clock is not that difficult, but it does take practice. Parents cannot rely solely on schools teaching it; they need to give their children practice, too.

I promise that if learning to read an analog clock was necessary to win at games Mindcraft or Warcraft, kids would learn how to read them in three days.

It's true - I have met kids who couldn't tell the time on an analog clock or watch.
Even some as old as 16.

Did you use an abacus in school, or a calculator?

When I was about 13 we used slide rules.
By the time I went to Uni we had calculators but
programmable ones weren't allowed in exams.

So, no abacus then.

You embraced new technology.

Digital clocks are new technology.

Children should be embracing new technology.

Maybe I'm outdated but I think I could handle those tasks.

My dad taught me slide rule when I was in primary. I reckon even doing simple problems with a  slide rule makes you visualise math in a way you can't electronically.

My daughter is doing advanced maths and physics for HSC and  is light years ahead of what I ever did tho, probably 1 kid in her school could do that level without a calculator  Grin

Slide rules??

How old are you??

We used scientific calculators.

OR his parents did not let him watch PlaySchool.

The big hand is on the 12 so it’s something o’clock.

The little hand is on 7 so it’s 7 o’clock.

Which brings me to this : Does Greg have problems with shapes?

(I used to get VERY upset if I did not guess the right shaped window lol).

Young enough for slide rules to be an antique when I went to school. I'll look thru his pile of stuff in my garage some day, it's an old wooden one.

I can honestly say that I’ve never seen one,  I’ve never held one in my hands and I would not know what to do with one. It must therefore be a BOY thing.

Re your daughter ... I like her subjects. (I did 4 unit Maths and 2 unit Physics and 2 unit Chemistry AND 3 unit English and 2 Unit Modern History).

I'm too embarrassed to say my age.
I did use a slide rule at school for a while when I was 13.
It was quite a novelty.

I just went and peeked at daughters calc, she gave me the weirdest look and said, would you like to see my pencil sharpener too  Grin It's a FX82AU PLUS II

How's this one?

Sharp Elsi Mate EL-120

I bought this in 1974 or 1975 when I was working in an office in the Perth CBD.

Had it in storage for decades, I've just put 3 AA batteries in it tonight and it still works perfectly.  Cool
