Even some as old as 16.

Did you use an abacus in school, or a calculator?

When I was about 13 we used slide rules.
By the time I went to Uni we had calculators but
programmable ones weren't allowed in exams.

My dad taught me slide rule when I was in primary. I reckon even doing simple problems with a  slide rule makes you visualise math in a way you can't electronically.

My daughter is doing advanced maths and physics for HSC and  is light years ahead of what I ever did tho, probably 1 kid in her school could do that level without a calculator  Grin

Slide rules??

How old are you??

We used scientific calculators.

Young enough for slide rules to be an antique when I went to school. I'll look thru his pile of stuff in my garage some day, it's an old wooden one.

I can honestly say that I’ve never seen one,  I’ve never held one in my hands and I would not know what to do with one. It must therefore be a BOY thing.

Re your daughter ... I like her subjects. (I did 4 unit Maths and 2 unit Physics and 2 unit Chemistry AND 3 unit English and 2 Unit Modern History).

Larry is always good for a laugh the way he keeps trying to make his lies real, never misses an opportunity.  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

I was taught to use a slide rule, can’t remember using it in class afterwards tho. I do remember buying a programmable calculator but I think that was after high school.

When I studied statistics at Uni we used mechanical statistical calculators: enter a number, pull a big crank and the sum, the square of the sum and the sum of the squares and the number of entries were calculated. When all numbers had been entered the machine gave you the mean, variance and standard deviation of your sample. Worked but a trifle cumbersome.

I just remember she's dropping physics next year because it's a lot of work compared to how it scales, it's all about strategy. She's doing 11 units, advanced English and maths, commerce then music. Her goal is a combined law/economics degree if she gets the marks, if not then start law and pick up economics later.

* She’s better off dropping Physics and picking up Economics then. (I now know that’s what I should have done.)

* The entry marks for law are higher than economics.

* I’m visualising these degree pathways👇

1. Economics/Law (combined program).

OR

2. Economics THEN Law.

OR

3. Arts (majoring in Economics) THEN Law.

I’m assuming she’s going to be attending Sydney Uni of course.

1. will be incredibly difficult to get into (it’s like trying to get into Medicine). Having said that ... there are a few ways to get around that obstacle IF she gets into Sydney Uni (which is far more flexible IMO).

Could you let us know how she gets on please?

Whatever you do please don’t let her go to UNSW. She’ll suffer there. Needlessly suffer. Their degrees are so inflexible and deliberately skewed towards the overseas Chinese student market.

It's still a long way off as she's just in term 1 of year 12, but last week she met with adviser who recons based on her past results here trajectory for law at Sydney or NSW (Sydney obvious preference) is looking good.

Good thing is uni is so cheap in Australia and if things don't go to plan she can do something for a year then pick up law, but fingers crossed.

As for subjects, she's been doing economics for a few years and it's actually her fav. Physics was just something to do in year 11 which is good to pump up your maths overall.

That's what I reckon.  No batteries to run down, no
moving parts.  Waterproof and no maintenance, ever.

My brother asked me what I did at night, and I told
him that was easy... I just used my torch.

I'd be guessing—considering this particular watch face—that
today's kids could be confused by the numbers on the diver's
time left scale.

Also there's no 12, 3, 6 or 9 on the actual face.     Dunno.
