It's true - I have met kids who couldn't tell the time on an analog clock or watch.
Even some as old as 16.
Did you use an abacus in school, or a calculator?
When I was about 13 we used slide rules.
By the time I went to Uni we had calculators but
programmable ones weren't allowed in exams.
My dad taught me slide rule when I was in primary. I reckon even doing simple problems with a slide rule makes you visualise math in a way you can't electronically.
My daughter is doing advanced maths and physics for HSC and is light years ahead of what I ever did tho, probably 1 kid in her school could do that level without a calculator
Slide rules??
How old are you??
We used scientific calculators.
Young enough for slide rules to be an antique when I went to school. I'll look thru his pile of stuff in my garage some day, it's an old wooden one.
I can honestly say that I’ve never seen one, I’ve never held one in my hands and I would not know what to do with one. It must therefore be a BOY thing.
Re your daughter ... I like her subjects. (I did 4 unit Maths and 2 unit Physics and 2 unit Chemistry AND 3 unit English and 2 Unit Modern History).
I just remember she's dropping physics next year because it's a lot of work compared to how it scales, it's all about strategy. She's doing 11 units, advanced English and maths, commerce then music. Her goal is a combined law/economics degree if she gets the marks, if not then start law and pick up economics later.
* She’s better off dropping Physics and picking up Economics then. (I now know that’s what I should have done.)
* The entry marks for law are higher than economics.
* I’m visualising these degree pathways👇
1. Economics/Law (combined program).
OR
2. Economics THEN Law.
OR
3. Arts (majoring in Economics) THEN Law.
I’m assuming she’s going to be attending Sydney Uni of course.
1. will be incredibly difficult to get into (it’s like trying to get into Medicine). Having said that ... there are a few ways to get around that obstacle IF she gets into Sydney Uni (which is far more flexible IMO).
Could you let us know how she gets on please?
Whatever you do please don’t let her go to UNSW. She’ll suffer there. Needlessly suffer. Their degrees are so inflexible and deliberately skewed towards the overseas Chinese student market.
