Some of the better Yoginis I have had have said the same sentiment.
During the yoga they often say 'do as you feel to do,  do what is right for you ........ '
At the end of the session they say 'Thank you for sharing your Yoga with me.'

Doing exactly as the Yoga teacher says is not yoga.
Doing what is right for you is yoga.
Once A Yogini said at time she looks around and we are all doing different things.
She loves it, that is her dream. That is yoga.

One of my Yoginis says 'May there be Peace in your mind, Peace in your words and Peace in your Heart.'

For all the stretching I was doing.
I was a bit stiff doing naked Yoga with my female Yoga Teacher.

I just did some yoga on the back deck, it was 10 pm, all lights off. Eyes acclimatise after a while
I did as my body wanted. It feels renewed and rested now.

Have woken up before dawn a few times and done yoga on the back deck.
The world is quiet, predawn glow, birds awakening.
Had an amazing sleep after it this morning

It'll be weird doing yoga with clothes on again.

I'm a long-term sufferer of a depressive illness,
(currently successfully medicated) GAD, and
hyper-vigilance.   I found this report interesting:
"Yoga can improve depressive symptoms and
anxiety in patients with MDD and has a safe and
wide patient acceptance".

Effectiveness of yoga for major depressive
disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis
.

Yoga may not 'fix' your ills. It's unlikely to worsen anything. Some medications do bring other problems.
If you get addicted to Yoga it is a good addiction.

If trying yoga for the first time, go very easy on yourself.
You can do it in a small lounge room with the TV off. Aim to do about 50% of what you think you can do.
It's not like normal western activities where the goal is to  push yourself. That gives injuries.
Yoga is not about attaining all sorts of unusual postures.
Yoga is about doing what your body wants, how it wants to do it. Yoga is nourishing for yourself.
Try to keep a good posture (straight lower back), go slow, be mindful of your breathing, be totally unconcerned that you cannot touch your feet/knees/whatever.
If you are in a position and you like it, stay there Smiley.
If you are in  a pose you do not like, try another one
Your goal is to warm up, stretch, feel your body move and enjoy it.

Poses I like are Cat and cow poses, downward dog, child pose and extended child pose, lateral twist.

I have to admit,  I was a sceptic. Though that there was no way just posing in various positions could help with fitness.  Then my wife dragged me along for a lesson.  I couldn't keep up, and I was already fairly fit. By the end of the lesson I ached in places I didn't know could ache.  I went to  a few more lessons after that then stopped because I had my knee in a brace for 4 months.

Good on you for giving it a whirl.
You do not have to try to emulate the Yogini. You should do just what is comfortable for you, what your body is telling you .
Yoga is not 'hard' in the way contact sports are.
But is it a different activity to what you may have done before. So back it right off, take it really easy. Feel good the next day.
Many guys start it, do it 'hard' because it is 'just yoga' or to impress the yogini and never come back.
That's western thinking.
The next day the aches and pains will surprise them, their ego has been damaged.

It's as though I had never seen or heard of weightlifting before, walk past a hall where some college guys are lifting weights.
Think that looks easy, I'll show them what I can do ........ Walk up to the big bar they are using and 'give it a good old country try'.
The back would go twang and I'ld not be walking home.
