The core problem with this Treaty Principles bill, despite its promoters' presumably good intentions, is that it unnecessarily stirs up social unrest for little gain.

Diddling with this old document well beyond the chronological context in which it was written - and written without the allowance for or expectation of amendments over time (i.e. not a constitutional-like document) achieves no purpose other than to remind NZers that the treaty was not seen as a serious or legal document for over 130 of its nearly 185-year history.
