But it only takes 2mg of Fentanyl to kill you - like a grain of salt.
Drug dealers mix it in with other drugs which then become lethal.
That's why the artist known as Prince died.

China supplies tonnes of it via Mexico every year.

Prince died from AIDS. The actual cause of his death was fentanyl overdose. But, he would have lived had he not had AIDS.

Prince is just one of 100s of 1000s of people who have died from drugs being
adulterated with Fentanyl.

What is fentanyl and why is it behind the deadly surge in US drug overdoses?

A medical toxicologist explains

By Kavita Babu, MD
May 10, 2022

Buying drugs on the street is a game of Russian roulette. From Xanax to cocaine, drugs or counterfeit pills purchased in nonmedical settings may contain life-threatening amounts of fentanyl.

Physicians like me have seen a rise in unintentional fentanyl use from people buying prescription opioids and other drugs laced, or adulterated, with fentanyl. Heroin users in my community in Massachusetts came to realize that fentanyl had entered the drug supply when overdose numbers exploded. In 2016, my colleagues and I found that patients who came to the emergency department reporting a heroin overdose often only had fentanyl present in their drug test results.

As the chief of medical toxicology at UMass Chan Medical School, I have studied fentanyl and its analogs for years. As fentanyl has become ubiquitous across the U.S., it has transformed the illicit drug market and raised the risk of overdose.

Fentanyl is both sold alone and often used as an adulterant because its high potency allows dealers to traffic smaller quantities but maintain the drug effects buyers expect. Manufacturers may also add bulking agents, like flour or baking soda, to fentanyl to increase supply without adding costs. As a result, it is much more profitable to cut a kilogram of fentanyl compared to a kilogram of heroin.

Unfortunately, fentanyl’s high potency also means that even just a small amount can prove deadly. If the end user isn’t aware that the drug they bought has been adulterated, this could easily lead to an overdose.

Then you don't have much of a grip on the reality of the world, especially the drug world.

Once again for slow learners - the potency of Fentanyl makes it much easier to over dose ..

& you just go to sleep, stop breathing ... kaput.

No wonder you still living in a family home ...

and you say you have experience & knowledge of the world?

Like I said you don't know your arse from your elbow.

Quote:
On the morning of April 21, 2016, Prince, the polymathic musician who created more than 30 albums and won seven Grammy Awards over a 40-year career, is found dead in Paisley Park, his Minnesota home and recording studio. The cause of death was an accidental overdose of the opioid fentanyl. He was 57 years old.

U.S. Life Expectancy decreased in 2021 for the second consecutive year, according to final mortality data released today. The drop was primarily due to increases in COVID-19 and drug overdose deaths.

A second report released today, “Drug Overdose Deaths in the United States, 2001-2021,” showed that overdose deaths, which account for more than a third of all accidental deaths in the United States, have risen five-fold over the past two decades. The official number of drug overdose deaths among residents in the United States for 2021 was 106,699, nearly 16% higher than the 91,799 deaths in 2020.

Other Findings:

The drug overdose death rate was 32.4 overdose deaths per 100,000 in 2021, higher than 28.3 in 2020.
The rate of drug overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone (drugs such as fentanyl, fentanyl analogs, and tramadol) increased 22% from 17.8 in 2020 to 21.8 in 2021.

Most of those dying from Fentanyl ODs are not chronic pain sufferers .... they're drug addicts by choice.

People with chronic pain/cancer sufferers are prescribed the drugs or given them under controlled circumstances.

Don't they deserve the best of pain relief regardless of the manufacturer & any controversy surrounding those manufacturers?

Having been prescribed fentanyl when I was a teenager, as a painkiller for my post-operation, I know how powerful is fentanyl. But, had I been given double the dosage, I would not have died. But, I would have been in a bad way.

After my mother had been treated for a broken arm, she was given a small dosage of fentanyl to treat the pain. She took the first half. The fentanyl, she described, put her in a daze quite easily. After a while, the nurses offered her the other half of her prescribed fentanyl. Mum refused the offer. A person like her is quite small and would likely have been easy to succumb to an overdose.

What the heck do my living arrangements have to do with my knowledge of something I have experienced myself 30 years ago? I have about as much access to the subject at my fingertips as you do. And perhaps with my mother being a retired nurse and her textbooks available on the subject, I would probably know more.

So, I said that the cause of his death was a fentanyl overdose. But, had Prince not had AIDS, he would have been strong enough to live through having fentanyl in his system. Or in fact, he probably might not have been using fentanyl. Prince had been fighting an influenza-like condition for a while and was not well for a while. Perhaps his immune system had been compromised for quite some time. Ergo, AIDS.

People have been living with HIV/AIDS for decades now.

Modern medicine now allows people with the virus to live a practically normal life.

Prince died in 2016 - a man of his wealth would have been able to afford the treatment/medication if indeed he had AIDS/HIV.

He died from an overdose of Fentanyl.

BTW you're not the only one to have been prescribed the drug.

You're still wet behind the ears.

I had told you that Prince died from fentanyl overdose. But the whole implication was that Prince would have lived, had he not been suffering the debilitating condition from his AIDS. Remember, Prince was suffering from a influenza-like illness. I could imagine that if Prince was not addicted to fentanyl previously to his diagnosis, he was probably taking fentanyl as a way of coping with his illness. Had he not been stricken with AIDS, he might not have been using fentanyl at all. Or if he was addicted to fentanyl, he would have lived to this day without overdosing. Overdosing for Prince might well have been just a mild/normal dosage of fentanyl for everyone else.

And why does my brief experience with fentanyl not count as evidence of the effects the drug has on the body? Post-surgery recovery, I was given a tablet once every number of hours. I would have a tablet before I went to sleep at night. Then I would have one during the day. After a few days usage, I was told by a nurse that my parents did not want me on the fentanyl anymore, given that it was costing quite a lot on the bill.

In any event, had I taken double the prescribed dosage, I would have been in a bad way. Prince, if he was an addict, would have developed a tolerance to the drug. If he was trying to get the highs of his initial fentanyl usage, it might explain an overdosing. But, I find it unlikely that a guy would be taking more than he usually would if he was having that pneumonia condition at the time. The AIDS struck him down. The fentanyl would have finished him off. I suppose "overdose" could be the word to use on a guy that was already well on the way to dying.
