Yep ... just a couple of days ago I asked a local farmer what his crop was like this year. He said it was a bumper crop, great year as they had plenty of rain but not so much that the crops were damaged, insects were at record lows, a perfect growing season  .. but with  woolies/coles controlling the market he would have been better of bulldozing his crop. They only pay him $6kg for his crop, which they then sell for $66 kg.

What's he growing that they sell for $66 per kg?

$66 kg - what vegetable sells for that price?

berries

What sort?

Woolies:-

Strawberries $8 kg.
Raspberries $36 kg
Blackberries $23kg
Blueberries $55.20

Looks like the last one blueberries might be the culprit....

don't know why they're so dear ..... I think they're tasteless ...

my 3 grandkids won't eat them - they are their least favourite berry.

Coles are selling them for $37.50kg

That's what I was buying - if not tasteless - very bland.

That's why the kids don't like them.

They have more flavour dried like sultanas and used in baking.

With its apple-y, fruity, tart bounty, the Riberry has quickly become famous across restaurants for its versatility and deliciousness.

Being one of the best native fruits when eaten raw or used in preserves, they often are sold to restaurants for over $65 per kilo with each tree bearing over 10kg of fruit when mature.

Perfect for pots or directly in the garden, the Riberry is planted in botanical gardens in Melbourne and around Australia.

It's Lilly Pilly.

You ate them as a kid.  We all did.

They were hanging off trees over the back fence in every neighbourhood.

Not me -

I ain't never seen them before.

You're kidding?

Lilly Pilly.

They're everywhere.

As kids, we'd eat them after school.

They were just street trees.

Hundreds of them, all over the place.

Used a lot for growing fence line hedges these days too.

Hmm, seems they don't grow in Victoria.

They're more popular in Queensland, which is where I started school.

In Bundaberg, they were everywhere - it's what we had for an afternoon snack, on the way home from school (bare-footed).

yes

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syzygium_luehmannii

The habitat is Australian riverine, littoral, subtropical or tropical rainforest.[1]
It grows on volcanic soils or deep sandy soils between
the Macleay River in New South Wales to near Cairns in tropical Queensland.
It is commonly grown as an ornamental tree and for its fruit, known as a riberry.
The riberry is the national fruit of Australia.

Since when? From what I've read it wouldn't have been called as such until after the 80's and it was decided to grow it commercially.

There's nothing I could find giving a date as to when it was granted the status of the National Fruit.

nah, buy them from the farm gate and they are sweet and juicy. Very good eating. What you get at the supermarket is picked before the sweetness can develop
