Forced marriage on the rise

The latest figures from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) show reports of human trafficking in Australia are on the rise, prompting a new public awareness campaign.

Under-reported crime

A forced marriage is when a person enters a marriage without full consent through coercion, threats, deception or a lack of understanding of the nature and effect of a marriage ceremony.

Some signs people within school communities are being urged to look out for include a family history of older siblings dropping out of school early, marrying early or raising concerns about early marriage.

Other signs include being "highly controlled" by family or community members, having their communications monitored, and expressing concern about upcoming family holidays or overseas travel.

There are posters in the international terminal toilets in Sydney about forced marriage and who to contact.
They don't say 'diversity is our strength', for some reason.

It definitely wasn't a tiny minority in the Bradford musso community where thousands of young girls were sent back to Pakistan to marry their cousins and bring them back into the UK. Resulting in thousands of babies being born with congenital abnormalities. Costs the NHS a fortune to look after them.

Forced marriage can't really be policed or prevented. The Police rely only on complaints from victims

How many victims out there who didn't know how to put in a complaint to the Police, or were scared of violent reprisal from their family?

Two girls who fled such a family were found dead in a Canterbury apartment months after being murdered.

Cultural enrichment, innit?

It's another tragic loss of a woman, allegedly at the hands of her partner. However, it's not just Ruqia’s death, but the circumstances of her marriage that also warrants attention.

Her husband has already been charged with her alleged murder, and earlier this month in the regional Victorian town of Shepparton, the Australian Federal Police arrested a further three people from Ruqia’s family. They've been charged over allegedly forcing her to marry her accused killer."
