Fire has destroyed a wind turbine between Redhill and Mundoora in
South Australia, and sparked a 30ha (75 acres) grass fire underneath it.
Fortunately, mild weather conditions made it easier to extinguish the
fire—low air temperature, low wind speeds, and high humidity.
Fire fighters were alerted the blaze at Clements Gap Wind Farm, owned
by Pacific Blue, early this morning (Wednesday), and nobody was injured.
The turbine will be dismantled by contractors and the cause of the fire
investigated. The damage is estimated to be $2.2 million.
—All the more reason to locate wind farms offshore, such as the
proposed Star of The South farm off the Gippsland coast in Bass Strait.
