If he does, he gets jailed for contempt, like anybody else. This is a criminal case. It's also a state case, meaning he can't pardon himself if he ever becomes prez.
You'll note he's charged with a felony, upped because he tried to cover up the more serious crime of election fraud - the crime Mike's already been convicted and jailed for, after following your DL's orders. Mike even has a tape of the big fella telling him to do it.
So there's Mike, the big fella's old lawyer, on the stand with
taped evidence of the big fella soliciting the crime. The prosecutor plays the tape, the court hears "pay in cash", then:
"Mr Cohen, can you point out the other person on this tape in the courtroom today?"
...
"Thank you. Let the record show the witness identifying the defendant. No further questions, your honour."
There's the serious crime, proven - just like that.
If Mr Trump's rookie lawyer is listening, she'll cross-examine Mike, starting with this:
"Mr Cohen, did the defendant give you permission to tape their conversation?"
Mr Trump will be glaring at Mike, shooting daggers.
The prosecutor will be prepared. "Objection, your honour."
"Yes?"
"New York is a one-party consent state. Mr Cohen was acting perfectly within the law by recording this call."
"Objection sustained. Mr Cohen, we'll assume you provided your consent to tape the call. Next question, please."
Mr Trump's rookie lawyer will shuffle her papers, turning red, then:
"No further questions."
"Thank you, Mr Cohen, you can stand down."
From next month on, stuff like this will be all over the fake news each day, BREAKING. It'll be a real gas.
70% of registered voters have already said they won't vote for a convicted criminal, so the big fella's polls will start to slide.
The case has already been through a grand jury, who heard the evidence and voted overwhelmingly to indict.
