The Albanese government has been accused of losing control of the country’s borders following the arrival of up to 30 alleged asylum seekers by boat in Western Australia.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton made the claim on Friday afternoon following the arrival of about 30 men, reportedly from Pakistan, who were found on the side of the road near Broome.
The Australian reports a local of the small Indigenous community of Beagle Bay, 128km north of Broome, found
the men seeking shade in bushes on Cape Leveque Rd about 10am local time.
It’s understood the driver then took them to Beagle Bay where one of the men told a local they were from Pakistan, the Australian reports.
They were reportedly in good health, dressed in T-shirts and trousers, and were given water at the local store.
The Australian Border Force (ABF) descended on the small community and confirmed they were conducting an operation on Friday afternoon.
“The ABF is undertaking an operation in the north west of Western Australia. As this operation is ongoing, no further information will be provided,” the ABF said.
Mr Dutton said the government was not taking border protection seriously. “There are disturbing reports about the latest boat arrival, it is least 12 under this Prime Minister’s watch,” Mr Dutton said in a press conference.
“People smugglers can pick out a weak leader, a weak prime minister and a weak minister, and this is what they have done.
“We have warned about this for some time, releasing the 149 criminals, watering down Operation Sovereign Borders, that sends a clear message to the people smugglers.
“It demonstrates that this government has lost control of our borders.
“I think clearly the government has not taken border protection seriously, the Prime Minister has never believed in border protection, along with (Immigration Minister) Andrew Giles.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters he had no information about the arrival of the alleged asylum seekers during a press conference in NSW earlier on Friday.
“I’ve been travelling in the car, so I haven’t been advised about that,” he said.
“But our policies are clear, which is that boats that arrive in that fashion … we have policies in place that ensure they are dealt with.”
The ABF said the only way to travel to Australia was legally with a visa.
“Australia’s tough border protection policies means no one who travels unauthorised by boat will ever be allowed to settle permanently in Australia.
The only way to travel to Australia is legally, with an Australian visa,” it said.
“Australia remains committed to protecting its borders, stamping out people smuggling and preventing vulnerable people from risking their lives on futile journeys. The people smuggling business model is built on the exploitation of information and selling lies to vulnerable people.”
It comes after the landing of 12 people at the remote Truscott air base, 500km northeast of Kununurra, in November 2023.
They were reportedly detained by the ABF, who refused to comment at the time due to operational matters.
