I am accustomed to my name. But, I would probably use my middle name, if I wanted to change my first name.

I'm happy with Geoff.

But when I was a little kid, my mum'd invariably call me 'Geoffrey '
if I'd been naughty.  It was a case of uh oh......  WTF now?

My parents would use my full name, when I was in trouble. It took until I went to court, as an adult, that they would call out your full name. Perhaps that is where the full name call for when you are in trouble comes from.

Is it pronounced "Gee Off" or "Jeff"?

A name is just a name. A name is associated with a person and accepted.

I don't tend to like or dislike names it is just who or what it is.

A category of name can be interesting. Common names (peter, sue, john) may infer something about the parents. Does it bleed into the person's self thought/value ? don't know.

More rare names also say more about the parents. (Aubin, Finlo, Florent)

In the end the person is just the person who is called by that name - its meaningless.

Like many born in the 40s/50s and perhaps the 60s, the names of the Children were usually linked to a common and often short set of names that had been used in the family line for centuries.   In some cases, woe betide the family who stepped outside the line and used a “foreign” name.    In my case, myself and my siblings all received the name of a family member long gone in line with the patriach’s wishes.   My Uncle and Aunt however departed from the fold and named their son “Terrence” which was not part of the lineage.   Believe it or not, they were semi ostracised for years because of that!

Not sure whether that tradition is still followed a lot these days.   For myself and my Wife, our kids have names that we liked at the time rather than conforming to the ways of the past.

I watched a facebook video about a woman who named her child "Clydia". She could not understand the reason why her daughter was getting bullied at school. The thought of naming a child with a name that reminds people of "chlamydia" is something that really leaves people shaking their heads in askance.

Most of us don't need to do that.

All good but I would be surprised if there were anything wrong with your real name either.

I dont like my real name but I would never legally change it because it is my ID for real-- I always go back to it when asked my legal name- Deed poll is a waste of time-  I likr forums cos I can change my name when I get bored with my current name. I just say my name is blah blah and thats it really.

Never like that with my family but common to for a second name to be family related. not mandatory just considered nice to do.

(ADDED)

Didn't think about it originally but Mr wife's middle name is her maternal grandmothers name and my middle name is the same as my fathers middle name. My wife got a better deal then me but I am not going to complain.
