Either way the Pilot had control of the ship.

Apparently there was no real protection of the bridge against such a collision.

Such protection is not hard to build and when compared to the possible damage, not expensive.

You're right but I read today that 1,000s of bridges have no protection in the USA.

Probably a good idea not to run all those ships under a connected span. The other bridge could be widened.
