Better than working in the filthy factories and sucking in the solid air particles that lead to early death and widows... women oppressed - what a hoot - men fought to have them removed to safety away from the filthy and dangerous factories ... and look at the thanks men get today.

Women's breasts got in the way of machinery and were covered in particles. It was terror and photos were banned. You see it today in Breast Screening which crushes them, blamed on Barnaby Joyce (LNP) after the Tony Abbott/ Julia Gillard punch-up. But women never thank you for dragging them by the tits.

... the winged keel?

It was a real winner.

It did win fame and fortune for some.

Wikipedia: "On 26 September 1983, the yacht Australia II made history when the oldest sporting trophy in the world, the America's Cup, was wrested from the Americans after 132 years."

Ben Lexcen, an Australian yachtsman and marine architect, invented the winged keel – a nearly horizontal foil, or wing, at the base of a sailing boat keel. They are typically found on high-performance sail boats. The winged keel made its debut in 1983 in America’s Cup on Australia II.

No ...... it came in at no.9

Only useful to those with enough money to engage in the snobby sport of sailing.

By far & away the best were the advancements of medical invention regarding penicillin, spray on skin and cochlear implants & pacemaker.

Even the black box recorder is better but I don't believe a No.1.

After all its use is limited into gathering information about mechanical/electronic failures to work out why people have died/been killed in an accident. Usually aircraft.

Ah, yes.

Good point.

And, thermoplastic resins.

Aboriginal people made a powerful thermoplastic resin from porcupine grass and grass trees. They beat the resin out of the grass, then cleaned it and heated it over fire to create a sticky black substance. The resulting resin hardened as it cooled and was strong enough to bind rock to wood. This resin was used to create tools such as spears, woomeras and axes.

And ...

Weirs and fish traps

Aboriginal people demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of engineering, physics and aquaculture in the design of elaborate stone fish traps in NSW, and the 100 sq.km eel farm at Lake Condah in Victoria. They made these fish farms by creating complex systems of canals, linked weirs and ponds out of river stones. Lake Condah shows evidence of a very large, settled community that harvested and smoked eels to trade. Some of Australia’s Aboriginal fish traps are thought to be up to 40,000 years old. They may be some of the oldest surviving human-made structures in the world.

Not much into musical instrument history but for boomerang(throwing stick) and woomera(projectile launcher) the only thing they invented was their names for them.

Whitey too, Setanta.

Banjo, Ukelele, guitar.

Good thing your Arab invented the stringed instrument, no?

The polymer bank notes…. our most colourful money…
When in China, a shop assistant wanted to do an exchange of their money for my Aussie notes.
Then in Canada the same thing… an exchange happened.
And….in California while sharing a Uber van with a couple black Americans… we swapped money… their money is all the same grey colour. Have to look twice if it’s $1 or $100

But show your colourful Aussie bank notes to anyone overseas and they love it! It gives me such delight!

I will be bringing heaps of $5, $10 and $20 to do more swapping when I go to UK and Europe later in year.

We export polymer notes to about 25 different countries

Hence the trend now for those countries to have more colourful money. USA still have boring grey notes.

But everywhere I’ve been people love our Aussie money.
I collect overseas money as keepsakes too.
I’ve got some old Italian lire money from 2001 before they changed over to EU.

Not sure why they're singled out as special these days.

Maybe the Australian 1988 $10 note - the world's first polymer note - deserves to be a standout, but many countries now have colourful polymer banknotes.

The International Banknote Society's Banknote of the Year has been awarded to polymer notes from the Philippines (2022), Mexico (2021 and 2020), Canada (2018), New Zealand (2015) Trinidad & Tobago (2014) and Samoa (2008).

Australia, the birthplace of the polymer note, has never won.

And nevermind that typo that was picked up on our new polymer $50 note - 'responsiblty'.

Winged keels and Hills hoists aside...

Then there's the greatest invention in aviation safety advancement - the black box flight recorder, invented by David Warren.

Not to mention wifi - John O'Sullivan and his colleagues at CSIRO are credited with inventing WiFi.
