Fantastic rain we have had in the last few days. 42mm up to 9am this morning. 16mm up to 5:30 this afternoon. We might have another downpour before the night is done. If it eases up by Friday, I should be able to get some mowing done on Monday or Tuesday.

According to the weather forecast, rain is going to stick around until next Thursday. But it will just be overcast conditions. I will have to use my mozzie zappers for a few nights.

One thing about where I now live—no mosquitoes! Have not heard a single one! This is NOT a complaint!

It's too cold in Tassie for mozzies except in summer.    Roll Eyes

You have any data to back that up, TVI™?

Winter is too cold, summer isn’t. Don’t hear mozzies in summer either, idiot.

Hi Mr ASPD,
I've been on a mountain in Victoria at 5,000 feet altitude in summer
and there were mozzies everywhere.
The rest of the year it snows there.   Roll Eyes

A bit off topic but relates to mozzies. . .

We had a minor problem with mozzies in Adelaide. Once I installed the fishpond and stocked it with Murray River rainbows and Flinders Ranges purple spotted gudgeons and one other I can’t remember the name of—no more mozzie problem.

The fish I stocked all ate mosquito larva, no new mozzies!

Facebook webpages have "facts" pages. They said that Iceland has no mosquitos or snakes on the island. I found that such a foreign experience to me.

It gets too cold in Tassie for mosquitos to breed. Up here, you have to be careful where you leave your buckets, because a rain shower could fill up enough water for mosquitos to breed.

Every year during the coldest part of winter, I light up a citronella lantern under my house. Part of the reason is to keep under the house a little warmer. But, I buy a large bottle of citronella oil with bifenthrin. Bifenthrin is an insecticide that makes sure that the larvae undergoing diapause are killed off, so that they don't become hatched mosquitos during the next rain event.

I have 3 mosquito zappers on during the rain periods. During the summer months, I will light up mosquito coils under the house just prior, during, and just after rain events, whenever there is a plague of mosquitos. Recently, I light up citronella tea lights in the toilet room, because that room is the only room of the house with uncloseable louvres. It keeps the mosquitos out of the house, and the room a little warmer for a few hours of the winter mornings.

Whatever happened to "winter"? Minimum temperatures have been between 15°C and 25°C. Nice rain on occasion, although nothing considerable.

What is happening in the southern states? Maximum temperatures in Frankston are below the minimum temperatures of Rockhampton.

Ummm:

Some mosquitoes carry viruses that can make humans sick. These viruses are spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Some viruses can be carried by mosquitoes in Tasmania, other viruses are only carried by mosquitoes in other states or territories, or overseas.

It is important to take steps to protect yourself and your family from mosquito-borne diseases by avoiding mosquito bites and removing mosquito breeding sites. This is especially important in the warmer months in Tasmania and when travelling interstate or overseas. Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus are present in Tasmania.

So, not too cold for mozzies in Tassie.

It comes down to humidity in the air. Even in winter, if there is enough moisture around, mozzies can still breed. During the dry season, mosquito larvae goes into a hibernation and wait until the rain pools water for the larvae to swim around and spawn.

I have just bought another 3L bottle of citronella and bifenthrin oil to use for my lamp downstairs. With recent rain, the mosquitos started acting up again.

There were plenty of flies around. So, I wonder if we might be seeing some more rain soon.

Oil of lavender will repel flies.
