Gordon has some expensive surprises coming.

"The average car insurance cost for a 16-year-old on their own full coverage policy is $7,581 per year or $632 per month. This is about four times more expensive than the national average for middle-aged drivers, which is $2,008 per year.Jun 5, 2024"

Then he registers insures it in his or his wife's name and nominate youngest driver for insurance. Much less. I pay a little less than $1000@year and that's with Shannons. We have an excess for younger drivers.

That is of dubious legality. The insurance company could refuse a payout if it believes that the insurance application was fraudulent.

How the hell would that be fraudulent? I buy a car for my family to use in my name and nominate the youngest driver on the insurance.

That's probably more than owning and running the car.

I'm going to buy firstborn jer first car.
Just a cheapie for about $25k.

Newish low km Toyota or Slightly older higher km Lexus?

Avoid small cars  like Toyota Yaris not much crumple zone.

For second hand cars look for something owned by older person who is unlikely to thrash it full service history and always garaged.

A second hand Corolla hybrid sedan might be in budget my local dealer had one for $27K. 4L/100Km about 20km range on electric power battery recharges as you drive.

Dealers usually give huge discounts on dealer demonstrators they give full new warranty on cars that might have around 2000km on clock. I saved around $10 k buying a dealer demo call around and see if any will haggle might be right time of year for this.

If Toyota, I like the look of the the Yaris X hybrid.
$25 will get a low km example

Have you considered Subaru? 86gt Toyota with Subaru motor. Good pose!

If the Yaris hybrid is just being used for eastern suburbs runaround it could be ok. Parking spots in Westfield are pretty small.
You could lend larger car to kids if they go further out and keep Yaris for close trips.
Toyota have perfected hybrids from Prius experience, Ferrari F8 Stradale have perfected hybrid for performance.

Setanta-
I have considered the Subaru BRZ have serious interest in my SS Torana at $150K might let it go.
Subaru would have to redesign sump to cure oil pressure problems with fast right hand corners before i get one maybe they will do it with next years model.

Exactly what everyone does. Insure it until they're about 25 then they're on their own.

Also regarding the size of a Yaris, the Yaris Cross isn't a tiny car,  4180 mm. An 80s Commodore is 4706

I wasn't aware of the Yaris Cross which is a small SUV it looks safer than a regular Yaris.

Toyota are cheap to service go have a closer look at one.

4L/100 Km will be cheap to run
