Melbourne teens involved in deadly Burwood crash were known to police

By Emily McPherson • Senior Journalist
6:29pm Jul 3, 2024

...

One of two teenage girls arrested over a deadly crash involving an alleged stolen car in Melbourne's inner-east was out on bail, 9News can reveal.
The pair were part of a group of
six youths travelling in an allegedly stolen jeep which ploughed into a Toyota hatchback

at an intersection on Warrigal and Highbury in Burwood yesterday evening.
The impact of the collision claimed the life of the driver of the hatch, a 28-year-old man from Ashburton.

Two girls were arrested at the scene while four male teens remain on the run after fleeing on foot.
9News can reveal one of the girls was out on multiple counts of bail and the group is understood to be linked to a four-day crime spree across Melbourne's south-east.
Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Von Tunk said it was a cowardly act to flee the scene knowing someone may have been injured or killed.
"The impact was tremendous. It was a high impact, high-speed impact," Von Tunk said.
"They know someone would have been hurt in that vehicle."
Witnesses told 9News the victim's car spun through the intersection before crashing into a resident's brick fence.
"They got him out of the car, put him on the lawn tried to revive him but obviously they were unsuccessful," neighbour Peter said.
Another witness told 9News he was driving only seconds behind the Toyota while on a trip for ice cream with his wife.
"It just could have been me, I was preparing to turn right into Warragul Road waiting for the lights and then an explosion happened," he said.

The group is also linked to an armed robbery on Sunday night at a milk bar in Ormond

where they allegedly threatened staff with machetes before stealing cigarettes.
Less than an hour later, the same group allegedly ransacked a grocer in Ripponlea.
Following the incident, the owner of the Jeep Cherokee told 9News he's now too scared to be in his own home.
"It's just a super sad situation for everyone involved, hopefully these people get caught," he said.

Police are calling on anyone who witnessed the crash or who has CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Manhunt in Melbourne after innocent man killed in Burwood crash

Man hit by stolen car in Burwood, Melbourne
Two teenage girls, both 15, have been arrested
Police search for group of males who fled on foot

A man has died after being hit by a stolen car, with two teenage girls arrested and or a group of boys fleeing the scene of the fatal collision.

A black SUV collided with a silver sedan at the intersection of Warrigal Road and Highbury Road in Burwood, in Melbourne's inner-east, about 7pm on Tuesday.

The male driver of the sedan, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

His car was destroyed and ended up in the front yard of a house on the corner.

The stolen SUV travelled further down the road before crashing into a tree.

Two 15-year-old girls were arrested at the scene and taken to hospital where they remained under police guard on Wednesday.

Several males inside the car are reported to have fled the scene on foot with police launching a manhunt involving highway patrol, the dog squad and the public order response team.

So now they have to take it seriously instead of letting them out on the street for what must be little bail Sad

Then they need to setup a remote penal colony where there are 100's of miles of water and they can't escape nor does anyone know where that colony is otherwise these pollies need to take responsibility for ruinning innocent people's lives Wink

Yes sir Nail,
is this another result of the immigration experiment?
Was the dead motorist collateral damage?

The cops asked for help.

How can we help find them when they won’t give us a description?

Gondwanamo Bay - you try trekking there..... snakes, crocodiles, dangerous everything, and wild natives in Abestine all around..... and sharks and crocs in the water ....

Good to see some of you guys getting onside finally with some of my long-running simple ideas.... the work is slow - but I'm clearly gaining ....

Now - that Reverse Boat People Program, Banishment From The Realm for wrongdoing, Cancellation of Citizenship/Visa and Instant Deportation, town stocks and ducking pool in Canberra winters etc..... what say ye??

Some of the older punishments work wonders... as you are beginning to realise...

No news of the outcome as yet:

UPDATE:

https://www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/8684433/government-puts-blame-on-court...

A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Malvern East on Wednesday night and charged with culpable driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop and render assistance, theft of motor vehicle and unlicensed driving.

He will face court on Thursday afternoon.

Two 15-year-old girls arrested at the scene were charged with theft of a motor vehicle and bailed to appear before a children's court at a later date.

Police Minister Anthony Carbines described the incident as a worse-nightmare scenario, with "lawlessness" and "recklessness" taking an innocent life.

"The government understands that the community is concerned that those repeat offenders continue to cause crimes, continue to grow their number of victims because they don't fear the consequences, in many cases, that are being handed out to them," he told reporters on Thursday.

"So we need to ensure courts take responsibility for explaining the decisions they make, for reflecting community's expectations and values."

UPDATE:

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/jul/04/burwood-melbourne...

The court was told a magistrate from Heidelberg magistrates court had removed the teen’s bail in March.
However, Von Tunk said police did not know his bail had been lifted
and visited him on the night of the crash to check he was abiding by his curfew.

“He was present at home, with a doona pulled up to his chin,” he told the court.

Prosecutors asked the court for 12 weeks to prepare a brief,
but the children’s court judge asked what evidence they had to prove he was the driver of the Jeep.

The prosecutor said police seized a pair of white shoes from the boy’s home when they arrested him, which she alleged the driver was seen wearing in CCTV footage of the collision.

She said they also seized a mobile phone, which she alleged was used to make a call near the scene.

“So it’s a cell tower and a pair of white shoes?” the judge asked.

“Yes, Your Honour,” the prosecutor replied.

She said one of the two girls arrested told police the 17-year-old was the driver,
but the judge said evidence from a co-accused was inadmissible.

Von Tunk alleged to the court that a search of the vehicle found a large machete, vapes, perfumes, boxes of gloves and Windex glass cleaner inside the Jeep.

He alleged the Jeep had been stolen days earlier during an aggravated burglary and used in two armed robberies before the crash, including one where three offenders were armed with a machete.

The prosecution applied for a forensic examination to get the boy’s DNA and to take photos of his physical injuries, to prove he was the driver.

The application was adjourned, and the boy was taken into custody to face court again on Friday.
