Bean Sprouts
Jul 19th, 2024 at 9:45am

I decided to grow some bean sprouts the other day and googled "mung beans". Google led me to a local Health Food shop.  Begrudgingly I paid $8.50 for 100g of "Organic" (don't get me started) bean sprouts. About 80% germinated.

As a matter of curiosity, I tried an Indian grocery store and found a 500gram bag of mung beans (Australian grown) for $4.50.  100% of them germinated.

That's over 1000% markup on cost!

So let's see -  it's good for the environment to sell tiny quantities of
mung beans in 3-colour printed plastic coated aluminium sachets?

Aluminium production is about as energy intensive as you can get.

I'll name and shame:

"Earth Friendly non GMO seeds"

You couldn't get any less Earth Friendly, and by the way there are no edible GMO crops grown in Australia unless you count oil seed crops. (Oil is oil. It doesn't contain genes.)
